Chojin
Aug 2nd, 2007, 08:02 PM
That would be because the Wii is as graphically powerful as the Gamecube, which is the problem.
Nope. The original devkit released for Wii was just a GameCube, which is why the first generation titles aren't as impressive as they could (should) be.

the Smackdown series adds something big to the engine every game. Though I do hate how some of the animations they use have been used for 5 games now, and how they somehow make the create-a-wrestler worse in every game.

I dunno what everyone is bitching about. I've never had a problem with my 360 and I also bought a faceplate pack for it with 12 different decepticons :O

The only time I play my wii is when I play virtual console games. There's no point in getting games for it that are also on 360 because shittier graphics and motion sensing shit doesn't impress me too much. Super paper mario looks fun though. I dunno about the 20 mario games for it though.

Gamecube. Network. Adaptor.

Especially in America, Nintendo has always fucked up the networkable aspect.
Whereas Japan got all the networky goodness, even in the N64 days when there was an add-on that included a modem.

There've been plenty of first party games from Nintendo that could've had online play, but none have been used to their full potential.

EndersGame

Adding a modem to something doesn't make it "better" . Saying that the N64 in Japan had a modem doesn't mean it worked, had use, or even made life more enjoyable. I cant remember a time when I've been playing on my 360 and wanted to keep my headphones on.

Besides, the online abortion that is PS3's "online experience" came from "Japan's networky goodness". That is too say, good like burning a bag of cats.

I heard Phantasy Star was alright. Nintendo didn't really market the online aspect. But yea ill definitely give that to you.

Fathom Zero

It's not that they didn't market it.

It's that people wanting it, correction, STILL WANTING IT, and have been denied. I want it. And I want intigration like in the 360.

Yes, I know that the 360 is nothing like the Wii and comparing one to another is like apples to oranges or Franzia to Bordeaux varieties, but I think that the Xbox took online console gaming to the point it is today, the standard.

I want one central "gamertag" under which you can message other people and all the other sorts of social fuctions you'd come to expect. But under Nintendo, we've come to expect much less.

I do not want these damn game-specific friend codes and you have all these numbers instead of just one name. One name for all your games you've played, everything you've downloaded, and you and your console.

Granted, Phantasy Star Online is good and well deserving of it's large fan-base.

But I still think the Miis are fucking retarded.

The little "friend codes":\ are so u can only play with people u know. It also prevents flaming by one group onto that person and from pedophiles from stalking kids, but yea they defiantly need a gamer tag. I don't care if a 68 year old is offering me candy in a van.

Go pound sand. I bet you don't even have a 360. I also bet that if I looked, I could find Wii failure rate numbers. People are willing to overlook 'em because of the Wii's "innovation."

Chojin, if you do get a 360, find a nice spot for it. If you keep it in a cool area, it won't overheat. It's when people have it right side up, on the carpet that it over heats. You have to let it breeeaaathe!

Chojin
Aug 4th, 2007, 06:44 PM
Jesus avatar guy, the friend code system doesn't prevent you from playing with people outside your group of friends. All it does is let you set up matches specifically with people whose friend codes you've saved - otherwise, you can still set up matches with randomly-picked strangers.

I don't like the friend code system or the way that Nintendo's handled online play, but I take issue with the statement that XBox live is the 'standard' - if it's the only service that offers online play as well as it does, doesn't that make it 'well above standard'? Compared to PSN, Steam, et al, I'd say that Nintendo's online strategy is 'slightly below standard'.

GUESS WHAT, DUMB FUCK. ELECTRONICS TYPICALLY GENERATE HEAT.
YOU MAKE A VALUABLE POINT HERE. FIRE ALSO PRODUCES HEAT, THEREFORE FIRE IS AN ACCEPTABLE MEANS OF POWERING A GAME CONSOLE. ICE IS ALSO COLD AND WATER IS SOOTHING, THEREFORE EVERYONE WILL LIVE IN CHILLED AQUARIUMS IN THE FUTURE.

Who's saying mine blew up? Nothing is wrong with it yet.

It ate two discs, but it was my brothers' fault. They threw a tantrum the day we got it and started kicking it while it is running. I don't think anyone would put any console in a situation like that where it has to have kick prevention.

We will see which of our consoles breaks down first. Your Wii or my 360.

Fathom Zero
Aug 6th, 2007, 07:41 PM
I just realized something profound and it's probably been circulating in my head for a while.

How can we even begin to compare Nintendo's Wii to the 360 and PS3?

They're fundamentally different on all levels. They're marketed to a different, (and wider), audience. The control schemes are vastly different. In terms of horsepower, they are very very very different.

It's almost as if they were from different generations of consoles.

They are incomparable on those grounds. They are two extremely different gaming experiences and, as I said before, it's like comparing apples to oranges.

This is true. But really, with lines like "Anyone, with proper knowledge, should be able to fix anything, thus making said problem a non-issue," do you really need proof that you said something asinine in the past, prior to a few hours ago?

By the way, my Wii is making strange noises when we play MySims, but during no other game. It's coming from the disc drive, though I have no idea if the Wii is supposed to be that loud. My guess is NO, and I called Nintendo to get a UPS shipping label sent to me. It arrived a few days ago (about 2 days after I made the call), and I was told that it would take about 3-4 days to get to Nintendo, 3-4 days to repair, and then another 3-4 days to get it back - At most 2 weeks, total, with no proof whatsover that something was wrong. When I called Nintendo, they had Smash Bros. music for the hold music and warned that my wait time could be UPWARDS OF FIVE MINUTES but thank god it was only like two or something. I told the guy that it was making strange noises while playing MySims and he said 'Oh, really? Is that game any good?' and we talked a bit about it. I offered to let him listen to the noises after he'd submit my repair order, and he was all 'What was that?' (it sounds like a hamster trying to escape a habitrail). However, the system still works fine and is just making noises in that one game, and I'm afraid to send it out because we use it too much (between MySims and Mario Strikers Charged and Metroid Prime 3, I don't think there's a day that it doesn't go used).

Compare this to Microsoft's service, wherein you can expect to wait AT LEAST a month to get your system back, and it is virtually guaranteed to break (if it wasn't, they wouldn't have extended the warranty to 3 years. Shut up.). I don't know if you have to pay to ship it to them in the first place, but my money is on 'of course.' Our friend Chris is going through this issue at the moment (they've had his box for at least a month and a half), and so far has yet to play his copy of Halo 3 due to their shitty turn-around time.

I also ordered a new set of 4 Wii straps from Nintendo's web site a few weeks ago, for free (I heard they had released new models of straps from Infendo). They arrived within the week. This is my second set from Nintendo, and these have a lil locking mechanism. They're cute.

The disc isn't scratched, I guess it just doesn't cache anything at all. It gets much louder when you go into areas with lots of stuff.

Same here. Like any online game, there's quite a few total losers who get way too into it, but for the most part everyone is pretty easy to get along with.

Expensive online service? I paid like $70 for a package that had a year of xbox live gold, new headset, webcam, and some free xbox live arcade games and shit. That's not exactly expensive. Emu
Oct 24th, 2007, 08:47 PM
It wasn't terrible. I mean it delivered basically the same thing the previous two did -- three difficulties, sixteen tracks and mirror mode. It suffers from Melee-itis and all the characters are clones of eachother. And they re-used a lot of the music. And it's impossible to get a boost in two-player co-op. And powersliding is impossible. And the battle minigames are awful.

Okay yeah maybe it is.

Guitar Woman
Oct 24th, 2007, 08:50 PM

Sure -
it's slow
the framerate is crappy
at least two of the stages are designed in such a way that if you hit someone with an item right before they make a jump, they have to repeat the entire lap
introduced blue shells, which were the worst idea ever
computer will literally teleport to keep up with you if you're doing too well
n64 analog control sucks

Emu
Oct 24th, 2007, 11:54 PM
Blue Shells are even worse in Double Dash. You only get them if you're in last place, and the only person they help is the person in second place, or third if it's a close race.

Chojin
Oct 25th, 2007, 12:00 AM

Emu
Oct 25th, 2007, 12:02 AM
No, the 64 one had some use, because it would swerve to hit all of the players ahead of you, but in DD it just flies over everybody, gets to first place incredibly fast (so much so that you can't keep up with it) and knocks out the person in first. But by that time it's so far gone that you can't possibly make any gain on it unless you saved and threw it when you were in second place, in which case you would probably nuke yourself in the explosion.

I love Yahtzee's sense of humor, but I can't get into any of his adventure games. I forced myself to like halfway through day 1 of 5DaS, but then I got distracted and haven't touched it since.

Interactive Fiction adventures are more my speed anyway, he should totally do one of those.

Guys I have a question.

The copy of SOTN I bought seems to be working about 90% okay but has a few errors due to a very small (probably about an eighth of an inch long) but rather deep scratch on its backside. This results mostly in some errors with the music at certain parts (mostly in the Marble Gallery and the first section of the SPOILERinverted castleSPOILER)
and some pretty bad graphics errors when I transist past a disc-reading area when moving from said areas. The graphics errors can be fixed by re-loading the area but this is kind of a pain in the ass. Being in the aforementioned areas when the music is screwing up results in some lag and/or freezing when I try to access the start menu or die. Opening and closing the disc cover usually fixes this.

The dude I bought it from said he would resurface it if it gave me any problems, but as I understand it there's some risk involved in it and if he resurfaces it I probably won't be able to get my money back. :( Should I have it done?

Fathom Zero

Halo isn't old enough for that. However, it does have its plot broken up into tons of books, and now supplemented by Halo Wars.

I'm probably going to go pick it up today. What I meant is that the store I found it in was a tiny pawn shop that dealt mostly in car parts and stereo equipment, and Katamari happened to be a gem surrounded by 50 copies of Madden '05-'07, so I don't think it's in danger of being bought any time TOO soon. Fatal Frame III on the other hand I found in Gamestop, and they never sit on the shelves more than a day.

I'm currently playing a freeware MMO Strategy RPG called Dofus. It's kind of like an online version of Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics, except instead of controlling a bunch of dudes you ARE one of the dudes and have to use TEAMWORK to survive!

I ran around shouting obscure lyrics at new guys and getting orally raped by Teddy for the better part of thirty minutes, then got into EPIC COMBAT with some little sheep creatures. That part was boring, but since I am a level one berserker with no weapons, magic, 1337 5k!11z, or party members other than the aformentioned haloboy, I wasn't exactly expecting Frank Miller's rendition of Thermopylae.

It's a little simplistic, but I like it!

So I had a job interview at the game store today! It went pretty well, the manager seemed really interested in the fact that I've done volunteer work taking apart and repairing/modifying computers, and wants to interview me again later when he starts doing repairs out of the store.

But that's not the important part. The important part is while I was waiting he encouraged me to make myself at home among the kiosks in the place, and I played Guitar Hero 3 and Halo 3, both of which were HORRENDOUS. :<

To start, GH3:
This game has some fucking problems, ok. The soundtrack is all right, but the game itself is a complete pile of shit. For one thing, the band member's character models and animations are so terrible and primitive that it is impossible to believe that this game wasn't made eight years ago for the original Playstation, left to fester, then re-released on newer systems with no visual updates whatsoever. It didn't look even half as good as the original Guitar Hero. Speaking of the PS1, by the way, Parappa the Rapper comes to mind when I play this because the game REFUSES to detect the notes I'm hitting when it's supposed to. I didn't play enough to decide if this was a shitty wireless guitar issue or if the notechart and the audio just don't synch up 100% of the time, but I had to hit frets way way early for it to register. Also, the fret signals kept gettting stuck and it wouldn't let me play any notes other than the one that jammed for periods of a few seconds, which is ridiculous for a game that requires you to be as rapid as this. I can blame that one on the wireless controller with reasonable confidence, I think.

I was planning on picking this up for my Wii when I had 80 dollars I didn't want anymore, but now I will not because this game is fucking awful.

Now then, Halo 3. I had less problems with this than GH3: the buttons are at least a little more responsive, and as always the visuals were PRETTY PRETTY PRETTY. At least, they would have been, if I could have fucking seen anything. Bungie seemed compelled to make this game a throwback to Marathon, and to that effect made the field of view ridiculously tight and horrible on the eyes. The fact that they also saw fit to put the crosshairs 3/4th of the way down the fucking screen and that the aiming mechanic is clunky as all hell probably didn't help, either. Mabye I've been spoiled by Metroid Prime 3 and all the PC shooters I've been bootlegging as of late, but Halo 3 definitely has the worst aiming I've seen from a console shooter in a long long long time. Again, the retarded placing of the crosshairs didn't make it easier. It most certainly was not as good as Bioshock, contrary to Chojin's opinion. And no, DuFresne, I am not just being a Yahtzeefag here.

So yes, pretty much any reason for me to get a 360 just went down the shitter.

But I'm totally probably going to get this job sometime in the future!

Chojin
Nov 27th, 2007, 08:45 PM
Guitar Hero 3:
Lag is caused by the HDtv being used, there are options to adjust this to better settings. The graphics are better than other Guitar Heros and that isn't really up for debate. The animations are much worse in GH3. The gameplay is the same as before, which is to say that it remains boring.

Halo 3:
The field of view is fine, and the same as Bioshock or anything else. Putting the crosshair lower prevents you from staring at the ground as much as you would otherwise and is for the most part a good design decision. Some of the guns take up a lot of visual room, but they have very few shots and do a lot of damage to compensate. The AI and gameplay of Halo 3 is better than Bioshock in so many ways that this is apparently a faith-based argument and there's no reason for me to pursue it any further!

Marathon:
Is also better than Bioshock.

Guitar Woman
Nov 27th, 2007, 08:53 PM
Marathon:
Is also better than Bioshock.
Well, yes. I wasn't saying Bioshock was anything special, but if given the choice I would pick it over Halo 3. Coincidentally, I'd pick Halo 1 over both of them.

I noticed they had an uncentered crosshair in some Beta footage I watched, but in the finished game it is so horrible that I can't even fucking function. I don't see how this makes the game better, I hardly spend any time looking at the ground in titles with dead-center reticules either. Although Halo is loaded with faggoty short enemies so I guess it makes a little bit of sense, but I think they completely overdid it.

Also, the version I played was for whatever reason in Spanish, which made me feel stupid :<

Chojin
Nov 27th, 2007, 08:56 PM
I guess play Halo 3 at someone's house instead? The game plays just fine for me and everyone else.

I didn't even notice that the crosshair wasn't vertically-centered the first couple times I played it.

Got to see a 360 die today!

We were over at a family function of Emily's and their kid had a Wii and a 360. He was playing COD4 and weird artifacts would show up after he played for a while. After more people showed up, we opened the floor to strikers charged, smash bros, and wii sports, but when he went to play madden on the 360 it red ring'd him.

This kid was about 15, so he ran and got dad and mom, I guess so they could make it all better. He'd bought the 360 with his own money and looked like he was about to cry.

I think Microsoft does this on purpose.

Who plays Guitar Hero for the graphics? :\ You can't even really watch them while you're playing anyway. I find them to be appropriate for the game since I tend to feel that low-grade graphics lend themselves well to rhythm games (see PaRappa.)

The mechanics are fun and really get me into it, but I only like about five songs from the entire playlist and the list is really underwhelming.
