View Full Version : Games you just fucking gave up on.

Because they were horrible, too hard, too boring, any reason counts!

I've really been trying to play Morrowind, trying really hard. I had somewhere around 30 mods running, and even with all that, I really can't get past the fact that it's a completely abysmal, boring, unentertaining piece of shit. Playing Oblivion for real for the first time earlier today really sealed Morrowind's fate for me. Even unmodded, I was able to have infinitely more fun in about an hour playing that than I've had during all my 15+ hours hours wasted on Morrowind.

Fuck you, Morrowind, you are the worst game in the entire world. I sort of like your story, and wish you were just a book. You'd probably suck a lot less!

I've never finished a single RPG besides Chrono Cross (and Pokemons Blue and Gold if those even really count). What's sad is that I really enjoy most of the Final Fantasies I have, but for some reason I always reach a point where I get bored and tell myself "eh, just play another game for a few days, then come back to this," but then I just never regain the willpower to pick up where I left off. But these days I don't even bother with RPGs at all because I know I don't have the time.

Actually, Chrono Cross is the only Playstation RPG I've ever even gotten to disc 2 on. :x

Edit: oh, I usually finish Zelda games, though, if those count as RPGs.

I don't know what the hell version you're playing, but my PS copy of Chrono Trigger only has one disc.

The only Final Fantasy that i finished was Dirge of Cerberus. I'm stuck in Final Fantasy X dragon thing that attacked you in the airship, i already made like 7 attemps, i think i gonna quit it. I can't even use a cheat disc on my PS2 :(

Guitar Woman
Mar 25th, 2008, 02:41 AM
Oh, yeah, Silent Hill 2.

I probably would have finished it despite how much I don't like anything about it, but I got bored wandering around the prison looking for the last sin tablet to put in the plaque under the noose and then just didn't play it again

condemned, but that was after the first stage ;<
bioshock, after a few hours
half life 2, after 4 hours
stranglehold, after the parking garage scene, due to the 360's awful controls for that game
duke nukem 3d, after realizing the level design was terrible
morrowind, after getting the star of nerevar or something ;<
oblivion, at various points (reformats usually kill my oblivion games due to all the mods not being the same)
countless mmos
ninja gaiden 2 after that wind stage jesus christ what the fuck
mario 64, about 40 stars in

pretty much my life has been an endless succession of failed gaming attempts!

I never finished Twilight Princess, because I had already completed everything else except the very last boss and I thought "well this is it anyway".

This goes for countless other games as well. In fact I don't think I've ever 100% finished a game in the last 10 years.

Why is guitar woman ALWAYS complaining about how she has been playing some game for several hours and hates it?

Here is a pro gamer tip for your GW: If you've played a game for a couple of hours and completely hate it don't bother playing anymore. Even more importantly; shut up about how much you hate it because no one cares.

No one is forcing you to play anything and I sincerely doubt you bothered to pay for it, so you're not going to be out of pocket if you delete it.

I'm about to give up on Ys III. This game is fucking hard.

You've just got to grind for a bit to gain a few levels, and use the downward jumping stab to kill tougher enemies.

And seriously, GW, stop play game in the Elder Scrolls series. And once you've stopped, don't start again.

Mar 25th, 2008, 12:04 PM
I give up on pretty much every game I play. Then months or years later I go back to it and decide I have no idea what is going on or what I am supposed to be doing, so I delete my save games and start all over again, only to abandon it in a couple of weeks. :(

The best example of that is Vagrant Story. I have restarted that at least 5 times.

Guitar Woman
Mar 25th, 2008, 12:38 PM
Morrowind is the first game in a few years that I acutally bought, that gives me the right to be ANGRY :<

Also, as I said before, I like the universe it's set in. It is INTERESTING. It's something I want to go and explore and would be totally great if the game wasn't awful :<

It's sort of like, if an INCREDIBLE TREASURE were hidden deep within the flesh of my right leg, and if I got ahold of it it would be wonderful and make all my dreams come true, and all I have to do is cut the fuck out of my leg to get at it. Then I start to do that and am like, "this is terrible, why am I doing this."

But also the treasure is really boring and colorless and I probably actually wouldn't care anyway.

bigtimecow
Mar 25th, 2008, 12:55 PM
NiGHTS journey of dreams: i ended up trading this in towards brawl so it would only cost 10 bucks, but yeah, i really tried to like this game. the visuals were nice and the control scheme (no, not the wiimote one) was somewhat fun, but the artificial time limit was annoying. there was absolutely no reason for me to only have 120 seconds to destroy some dragon mouth floor disappearer that bursts into little bubbles that i have to fly around in circles to destroy.

but then again, maybe the entire game doesn't really make sense :/

I gave up on trying to beat Resident Evil 4 for the fifth time.

Chojin
Mar 25th, 2008, 02:08 PM
Oh yeah, same as esuohlim I quit Twilight Princess, but I did it on like the second dungeon because I couldn't see a fucking thing. LTTP is to date the only zelda game I've played, liked, and beaten. Since that had an overhead view, you could actually see all of the elements of the puzzles you were trying to solve, but in Twilight Princess I just couldn't find anything and kept missing jumps and falling into lava. And it was just cripplingly boring.

Also Willie I count failing at MMOs to be not getting to the level cap. Which I've never done, so maybe I need to set a new standard for myself :< Closest I ever got was hitting the level 40 cap on City of Villains, but they raised it to the City of Heroes 50 cap and I never got that :<

Get the PS2 version. The effects would probably look nicer anyways.

Also, to stay on topic and avoid commiting internet crimes, I've never gotten around to beating Final Fantasy I, IV, VI, or VII.

Recently, I've stop playing Oblivion because it was taking up way too much time and I didn't really feel I was progessing that well.

FFI- I gave up after getting beaten by some sort of vampire resembling Dracula (I think)
IV- Made it to the last boss and got my ass whipped
VI- Gave up after several fruitless attempts to find Locke (I was unaware of the "find" function on my computer at the time, which would have helped with a walkthrough)
VII- I twice saved over my files (which were countless hours into the game and on the third disc). I was going to save my friends files for them after they left, and out of a force of habit I forgot to move the cursor down and save on my fucking file >:. That killed my interest of the game for a while.

Fathom Zero

There's only one other situation as bad as that and it's the part where you have to break into Ryan's office. Most of the other fetch quests are fairly linear and forward-moving, i.e. no backtracking.

I gave up on it some years back after I got to some floating island and was constantly getting my ass beat by the monsters and I had no way of getting off the island without completing the mission.

Recently I started playing it again, this time the GBA version. Played it for a bit but stopped a few weeks ago for no real reason. I do plan on getting back into it, so its status is pending.

Running 0.62 Output - opengl (have also used ddraw, but it dies if the screen gets pulled away -- failing of DirectDraw API from Microsoft) CPU - dynamic Cycles - 30,000 Frameskip - 0 Scaler - normal2x. These settings hover my CPU usage around 93% while running the game. The machine in question is a Pentium 4 3.06 GHz. I can't help but think that setting cycles to 150,000 (5X higher than my settings) would swamp any machine available... Motion and action are fluid, at least as fluid as any machine I actually ran the game on when it came out... This runs quite smoothly for me. The main things I've found for accelerating _all_ games under DOSbox, but especially 3D games, is to make sure you are NOT using "surface" as your output. Any of the other outputs (overlay, opengl, etc) will provide a factor of 2 speed increase. Similarly, since 0.62 has improved dynamic cpu support, that appears to grant another 2X speed increase. Very cool, guys!

Yep, flying can be pretty tough, but if you've still got your savegame, I've got a tip for you: instead of going cross country through all the trees, go around over the water, to and back, and you should still have enough time. Worked for me.

The first time I played through San Andreas I spent literally hours trying to complete flying school. On my second play through I think I moved through flying school in less than half an hour. :\

Ditto. It's like learning to ride a bike. Difficult to learn, but once you've got the hang of it, it's no problem.

I really liked playing Final Fantasy 7. I'm not too great at these games because I really like the story, but I hate turn based combat. So whenever I got into a fight with like a mushroom thing, or something I never HAD to battle, I just ran away. As a result, my characters never gained a lot of battle experience and when I came face to face with a really major boss I would get totally molested in like a minute. I can see how some peeps like the idea of upgrading of your characters abilities and stuff, but it's way too much management for me to do without getting bored fast. I liked watching the Final Fantasy 7 movie 'Advent Children' more than I did playing the game.

I'm sure I haven't finished a lot just because I wasn't interested, but the only game I just fucking gave up on was Hugo's House of Horrors. If you've never played it, it's basically Resident Evil with the graphics of Oregon Trail. Your character is completely controlled by verbal commands, so if you're saying "lift vase" instead of "raise vase", congratulations, you'll never get the cork to plug the hole in your raft. Maybe a dog already ate you.

I think my dad and I were close to the end of the game (you can get there in 10 minutes but the game is SO GODDAMN HARD it felt epic), when we came to a mummy blocking a door. He asked "who is the author of Dracula?" My dad doesn't read fiction, and this was before Al Gore invented the internet. We had to go to the library and come back, then in the next room a dog ate us.

Fuck that game

You didn't know the author of Dracula? I loved the Hugo games. All three were great, but I remember fucking hating Hugo 3 when I was a kid.

I agree fully. I think it was like, the bank left and land that I just couldn't do. For one I kept stalling and realized that my landing gear was down, I did that about 30 times.

Yeah, that's why I hated Hugo 3. I remember something involving the rat, but I also remember the witch doctor fucking bolting over and killing me if he saw me try to escape.

I've beaten 10 too and even had the patience to play all that goddamn Blitzball in order to get all the ultimate weapons. It's the only real Final Fantasy game I've played.

Actually I did give up on Blitzball. Worst FF minigame ever. Wakka was left without his ultimate weapon. I mean, I even got that one weapon where you had to dodge 200 lightning strikes!

Oh god, The fucking Immortal.

When I was a kid, I got ahold of the passwords for all the levels, and I got the point where I could beat them all, except that one puzzle where you had to drop the gems at 3 specific spots to open the way. Then years later, I looked it up online, and the answer still pissed me off.

You got past the room with all the worms?

/que the old "one guy starts to slowly clap, then speed up. And then everybody claps" bit from Lucas.

EDIT: Also, I think I gave up on a Duke Nukem game back when I was a bit younger, my balls aren't made of steel.

Zomboid: "the witch doctor fucking bolting over"

That description in and of itself explains that you not only played that game, but also hated it with all the passion that is called out of your soul when you feel so smart for the rest of the game, and you can't beat a fucking witch doctor, and this fucking rat is scurrying all over the place, mocking you >:

Dr. Boogie

You got past the room with all the worms?

Yeah, barely. I'd get about halfway through the room, only to have the stupid tuning fork break, leaving me high and dry in worm country. It got to the point where I had to memorize the first few steps through the room, and then use the fork when I couldn't remember any more.

Clock Tower, SNES.

I kept getting lost, and could never figure out the "cradel under the star" puzzle or whatever that crap was. I beat the PS1 game, though.

I also had to give up on Lufia II for the SNES. Nay...I was forced to give it up. I got all the way to the last dungeon that had a puzzle where you have to cut down some grass before it grows again. It was much harder than it sounds. Since I was playng via an emulator at the time with a keyboard, it was practically impossible to input the commands fast enough before the plants started growing again.

I really liked that game too :(

Shit that was so long ago, maybe 7-8 years ago. If I still had the game I'd try again with an actual controller but I don't have the time to do that all over again.

You have to use the fire arrows for that, One of my favorite games but I played through it long before the internet and I'm pretty sure no other console game had more aggravating puzzles.

Me too. Out of This World was an awesome, innovative game but I never got more than like 20 minuates into it. It was just more frustrating than fun for me.

That's one of those games I should probably revisit.

In Call Of Duty 4, the mission where you wear the camo suits, has anyone beat this level on the hardest difficulty setting? The part right at the end where you have to wait for the chopper to pick you up, I tried for about 2 hours and just gave up. It's the hardest thing ever.

Fat_Hippo
Apr 8th, 2008, 08:02 AM
Afte a long, long...long time, I beat it. Yeah, it's fucking hard. I hid behind the bumper car house for most of the time, occasionaly jumping up and shooting some people, and hiding when I took damage; still nearly died when I finally made it though. Throw some grenades and try to kill as many as you can before the helicopter comes, so you don't have to kill them later.
