i just saw repo men and the crazies. The crazies is a very predictable zombie flick that instead of zombies uses las plagas from re 4
repo men reminds me of minority report but the ending is awesome

The original Crazies is awesome. I was looking forward to the remake but missed it while it was in theaters.

It looked like the Crazies was just another zoombie crapfest in the tradition of the whole "world's population gets infected with a virus...virus sounds good, right?...that makes average humans fast, pissed and hungry for human flesh" genre.
If anything it'd be a prion but that's something for the science and health thread.
I liked 28 Days Later (but not 28 Weeks Later), the Dawn of the Dead remake, and so on. But "I Am Legend" (shown roughly 12 times a day on TBS, apparently) showed me just how potentially shitty that stuff can get, so I take a pass on a lot of the new zoombie movies coming out.

The original Crazies came out in 1973 though by Romero. It centered on a disease that would give someone the crazy, nothing zombie like.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is the first Michael Cera movie I actively want to see.
Also, it's really weird, in that A) Ramona actually looks like my ex, and B) It's pretty much the exact same story as our relationship, only slightly less fighting her ex, and slightly more her apparently hating my guts after three months. :<

I LOVED shutter island, and was psyched that scorsese was involved. The plot was inconsequential, and Kitsa was right, it WASN'T really that much of a twist, anyone with half a brain immediately picked up on the themes especially in the hallucinations: water, guns, delusions of persecution you knew what was going to happen, what HAD to happen; it was mainly wish fulfillment for everyone who ever watched old school, REAL thrillers and wished that someone would make a modern movie in the same style. And I'm NOT talking hitchcock, I'm talking the likes of val lewton... still, that WAS the damn problem, it was specifically catered towards hardcore movie geeks who would love to watch how Scorsese would SHOW the scenes DeCaprio pulling the trigger and "shooting" the doctor was FANTASTIC, oh god I was geeking the fuck out over that.
plus, the actors hammed it up in the most beautiful way possible, going back to the oldschool thriller point: I just wish that Max von Sydow wasn't relegated to making a huge impression, with absolutely NOTHING to go on (including screen time), in every single new role that he gets

I JUST FINISHED WATCHING
Shutter Island was a traditional idea it seems, an old standby, but put together so wonderfully. It wasn't a movie that tried to trick you by comically painting the picture in one direction, only to go 'WHOOPS, WE LIED THIS WHOLE TIME THIS IS ACTUALLY WHATS HAPPENING" in the end like most other twist endings do (Angels and Demons comes to mind). It was very careful to keep it making sense so you sort of knew what was going on, but added just enough doubt to make you question yourself on it, perfectly balancing everything out for some supreme suspense. No winking at the camera, no suspension of belief needed.

the ending did kind of have a neat twist at the end though FOR EGG SAMPle did he realize he was a crazy fuck and purposely allow himself to get that srguery thing or whatever because he hated that bad part of himself and wanted it to die so he could die a good person which he implied BEFORe HE WALKED THAT STONY PATH or was he really just crazy and didn't realize it.

Exit Through the Gift Shop.
I really liked this film/documentary. Well, I was entertained, interested, I laughed at it... I enjoyed it. I don't know if it's what I expected, and almost wanted it to be. Nevertheless, it was very good. Quality stuff.
It's a film by Banksy, but contrary to what people expect, it's not about Banksy. I sort of knew before hand that it wasn't going to be about him, so I wasn't disappointed by that, which I think may have disappointed some people.
I've been a fan ever since Dole mentioned him to me on these very forums, and I don't see him as a sell-out or anything like that; in fact I think this film addresses that to a large degree. Hell, the title itself is pointing fingers in all the right places. It has some very situational humour thrown in, and some well timed wit.
Anyway, very good stuff.

It was horrible. John Travolta looked like a total homo. The plot was obviously written by some 12-year old spastic who just read a Tom Clancy novel and decided to make the story more awesome by adding lots of guns and a washed up actor with the stupidest fucking beard. Everything else sucked too.

same thing goes for animation...
wanpaku ouji no orochi taiji (aka little prince and eight-headed dragon)
very cool "early anime" movie from 1963. it has english dubbing but unfortunately i couldn't find subs online, and the dub is aaaawful. also i don't know if it's this way in the original dub or just the english one, but they never use names except for susanoo. instead of "amaterasu" they always say "sun goddess" or "sister" (to susanoo), and yamata no orochi was always just referred to as "the eight-headed dragon," kind of lame. also the voice actors weren't just aaaawful, but also teeeerrible.
totally cool movie, though. i like animation that makes me or somebody else say "oh, that's awesome" every few minutes. this one did it.
before that, it was hakujaden, another early 60's toei anime (the first anime in color i believe is the claim). this one definitely was trying a more disney-esque approach (and was released in the states). the movie itself was ok, pretty boring--for a better film of the same story, live-action green snake is cool.

The only things I didn't like about it was that Nightwing and Batman were buddy buddy in it and Batman's teeth when he was upset about something. Sometimes the emotion portrayal was displayed only using his mouth. In my head it reminded me of Beavis' jaw when he tries to concentrate really hard on something.

I just saw The Bridge, a documentary which is about the Golden Gate bridge and it's high rate of people that choose to end their lives by jumping off it. It focused on the families and friends giving interviews, and some of them seemed so distanced from the lives of who they were commenting on that suicide wasn't that surprising. Another group of parents brought me close to tears with how understanding they were, and how they obviously did all they could to make their mentally ill son feel loved and happy.
There was a lot of footage of people jumping to their deaths, wich was very powerful and (I hate to say it, and sound grisly) edited very well.

I watched Inception and was, for the most part, unimpressed! I just don't like movies anymore, it seems.
OK, well, the last hour or so was actually pretty gripping and made it worth it to me in the end, but the problem I have with movies that no one else in the world seems to care about is attention to characterization. I don't care how great and "innovative" the concept of the movie is, I just can't enjoy a movie that utilizes one-dimensional characters as plot vehicles. Everyone had two emotions, scared and smug. By the end of the movie the only character I knew by name was Leo's and the guy who played Fischer, and I still wasn't even sure if Leo's character was named "Dom Cobb" or "Tom Cobb". :(
I'll take a movie about everyone sitting around and doing nothing but talking over a fast-paced action thriller any day. I like to care about characters, movies like Inception don't allow room for this in my opinion. Movies rarely do. :\

Expendables. It was a great laugh, I had a good time. Shame there was no Van Damme, but it was still classic.
There was a preview for one of those shitty Date Movie/Meet the Spartans type of thing based on the Twilight series, and it looked like the worst thing to happen to humanity since the holocaust; but the four or five thirty somethings sitting behind us laughed at every single preview joke we were treated to. Serious laughs, too. "That looks so good, I can't wait" said one guy as the Edward vampire character bit a pizza delivery guy in the neck.
I didn't think anyone actually watched them or enjoyed them. What a world we live in.

It was ok for what it was. I'm not going to be a GRUMPY OLD GUS about it like I am with every single movie I see, because it was enjoyable, but I wish like damn everything about it wasn't so predictable. I would have liked the movie better if I wasn't correct :( Also I knew nothing about the movie before seeing it so I expected some supernatural spooky-island shit, which I would have prefered being the gigantic fag that I am.
It was the second movie I've ever seen with Leonardo DiCaprio, the first being Inception last weekend. Both movies have Leo's character being in a dream within a dream. :eek

Saw the Expendables and Scott Pilgrim today.
Expendables was awesome. Tons of bros and a girlfriend or two were in the theater. Really made the movie even more fun. Everyone's basically just playing the same characters as they always do, but that's what everyone wants anyways. Pretty fucking awesome.
Scott Pilgrim was actually really good, and I expected it to really suck. Almost better than the books, except the casting felt kinda awkward (Michael Cera plays Michael Cera and not Scott Pilgrim, who has more energy than Cera could ever DREAM of. The other actors looked more like awkward cosplayers or stunt doubles for the real actors, except they all called out so we're stuck with the doubles. Alison Pill is pretty hot as a red-head though.)
The fight scenes made up for it, especially the battle with the twins. That felt like something out of the Tenacious D movie (except good.) The ending was way better than the melodramatic disaster from the fifth and six books, so I definitely appreciated that (although Nega Scott still gets thrown in at the end for no fucking reason. WHY IS HE EVEN IMPORTANT IF HE'S NOT EVEN THERE FOR A WHOLE MINUTE?!)
Good stuff. Expendables was a little more fun, but Scott Pilgrim gets points for not being a total disaster.

Watched the new Clash of the Titans yesterday and it was missing a lot of what made the original great, so I watched the original today and what the major difference between the 2 is that the original had morals (much like most Mythology) and the new one was nothing but a testosterone revenge story. Just like Avatar, you can have all the pretty effects you want, it's not worth watching if the story is boring.

I think I found a lot of the small, or background jokes the most funny parts; Robert D's facial expressions cracked me up. I love war filums, and the cliches certainly made me laugh.
I found most of what I figured to be jokes as funny, and I really hate it when I can tell a movie is telling a joke... and it's not making me laugh. If that makes sense.
I watched it recently with a girl, and she found it funny for totally different reasons to me; slap-stick, retard jokes, half naked fat people, swearing... more low brow stuff that the movie still manages to do really well. It's a great comedy.

It premireed the same day as Expendables and Eat Pray Love. The perfect guy flick and the perfect chick flick combined will trounce some poor nerd film. What's worse is the movie was really expensive to make (I thin $60 million?)
Now, Vampires Suck being second highest grossing?! The fact that those people are still making these movies is frustrating enough. Those men should be charged for war crimes and punished corporeally, and everyone who paid actual money to see it should be put on a rocket and shot into the sun.

Most people in this world are fucking idiots with bad taste, bad sense of humour, bad style, bad judgement and they smell like shit too.
I see a million fuck wits a day, and only a small trickle of intelligent people, yet I am still surprised when I hear a gaggle of shit brains behind me in the cinema laughing their god damned empty heads off at the "Vampires Suck" trailer. And as horrendous as that seems to me, apparently I'm in the minority, since this is a popular and funny movie to the masses.
It's stuff like that that hits it home how fucked this world is, and it really depresses me. Vampires Suck and it's ilk just makes me think of our end as a species and our capability to survive and prosper.

You didnt like Sharktopus? The boy and I had a great time laughing at that. The end where they blow his brain up was phenomenal. :lol

They certainly dropped the ball on cinematography on this one. Come on SyFy. You've done better.

Sep 29th, 2010, 05:35 PM
You're talking about SyFy Channel's movie production values? From the makers of Ice Spiders and Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus is supposed to come something good?
As an aside, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus were made by that Asylum company that made the Transformers ripoff, Transmorphers. It seems to be what they're good at.

I'm saying that in terms of what their standard production value usually is (which is usually sub-par), this is definitely way worse.

No way, Sharktopus is the bestest thing ever.

RABID GRANNIES -
it took like 40 minutes of badly dubbed boring ugly english people before there was any violence, and by then i had completely lost interest.

the second half is OK for a shitty b-movie, but not worth sitting through the first 40 minutes or so.

CITY ON FIRE
an "inspiration" for reservoir dogs. by that i mean tarantino ripped off this movie. unfortunately this one only had the english dub so that sucked.

I've seen the dvd case for City of fire and I remember the back of the case literally saying that "This is the movie that was ripped of for the plot of Resevoir Dogs."

it's pretty good. i like reservoir dogs more, unfortunately, but it might just be because SPOILERZ the "i'm a cop" in reservoir dogs was immediately followed with a gunshot, but not in city on fire.
VAMPIRE CIRCUS
some hammer horror film (without lee or cushings!) that was pretty sweet. i enjoyed.

FROGS
sam elliott plays a freelance photographer slash hippie who ends up on some rich old man's private island that is overrun by frogs and snakes and lizards that end up killing his family. don't get me wrong, it's a shit movie, but it's got tokay geckos being adorable.
THE DEADLY SWORD
easily the worst dubbing for a martial arts movie EVER, which makes this movie awesome. it HAS TO BE intentionally bad, but not so in a "let's make a funny dub for a shitty movie" sense, since it's your typical generic wuxia plot. the voices are just so absolutely awful. and great.

yeah it wasn't as bad as everybody makes it out to be. i mean, the plot was nonexistent and the acting was terrible and it was just stupid, but man... those tokay geckos were great.

Let me in. Really good. I liked how in the movie they don't need to explain what a vampire does or is. You just know what it is so stuff just happens and you're like "Yeah, that makes sense to me. Thank you for not wasting an hour explaining it to me.'

woah woah, that's out already? how does it compare to let the right one in? the trailer made it look... about the same, but american. which means it'd be lame, haha.
also,
THE BAT PEOPLE
shitty movie. i love bats.

yeah but i tend to avoid new things (unless they have someone like donnie yen in them!) anymore.
i'm so glad i'm not the only one. girlfriend was browsing netflix when we first got it, checking out awful-looking horror movies, skipping over any with a date later than 2000. awesome.

It's not that he doesn't like movies. It's that he's unnecessarily critical of them, hence the high post count in here.

hell yeah, donnie yen is awesome. ip man 2 came out this year, and it's awesome as well. he fights sammo hung in it. on a table. it's not as good as the first one, but it's worth checking out.
IZO -
expected the movie to be awesome based on the synopsis (samurai comes back from the dead and kills a lot of people), but this movie is fucking balls. couldn't finish it.
HARVEY -
jimmy stewart with an imaginary friend in a six-foot-three bunny. this movie was great.
BARTON FINK -
the coen brothers have made consistently good films. this one's pretty silly, but i liked it.
