this actually looks pretty good from the ign trailer i saw. most of the time, homage games are just "good for what they are" or gets points for the source material, but this looks like it might be legitimately fun to play. the pacing is good, too.

Thanks man, glad ya like it. We're working on a real trailer to promote the game and show just how far we've taken it. I think it's gonna surprise everybody just how much has been put into this thing. I'm so excited to see what everybody thinks of the final release.

Rog, when is the next beta. Stop keeping us waiting in suspense!
It'll be ready when it's ready. If you signed up for the beta tester list, you'll get an email about it whenever we have something new for people to test out.

Well I can tell you this - if you thought Domo-Kun's Angry Smashfest was filled with loads of nostalgic references, this game absolutely dwarfs it in comparison. There's also a boatload of original art - including big cutscenes.

Haha, it feels like that sometimes, but we've never stopped working on it. We've just added onto it more 'n more. The game itself will be completed sometime this fall.

Way to get some bro-loving from a half naked guy, Rog. Glad to see those interviews showing off some new scenes from the game.

So Abobo is going to have about 8 levels, right?

Mockery
Aug 9th, 2011, 12:17 AM
Eight levels officially, but there are other scenes that take place in other games, there's a boss fight that's in another game, and the Contra level is actually a double-level with two bosses. So it's really a lil' more than eight if you want to get technical about it.

Once a level is cleared, you will be able to access it and replay it anytime you like via the level select screen. In other words, if you can't finish the game in one sitting, you can always come back later and start back up on the level you left off on. Also, if you play the game on Newgrounds, it comes in handy for replaying certain levels so that you can collect all the medals and secrets in the game.

Nick
Aug 9th, 2011, 12:33 AM

Zomboid
Aug 9th, 2011, 01:09 AM
Ah, ok then. Good. I can justify spending money on the posters because I frame those and then they're officially objects d'art and they're fun for people to look at, but games seem more frivolous to the respectable adult in me :posh.

They said in the interviews it's going to be a free flash game, so yeah.
Don't assume that I watch every video I see just because you do.

Nick
Aug 9th, 2011, 01:22 AM
Pretty sure someone would find a reason to sue them for selling Abobo for money. Since they kinda don't own any of the characters of the game levels, y'know.

Zomboid
Aug 9th, 2011, 02:05 AM
Yeah, and to my knowledge, it would be the first time someone ever made a parody or homage and got away with it based on that. Like that movie, "Scary Movie." The reason it didn't go past one movie or branch off into other hilarious genres is because laws are super strict when it comes to that sort of thing, y'know.

Anyway, Nick, maybe these kinds of discussions are best left for the chat thread, y'know. :picklehat

Nick
Aug 9th, 2011, 12:23 PM
I'm not sure you can get away with calling something a parody (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parody#Film_parodies)or homage in court when you're using art from other games. You could probably get away with it due how old these NES games are, but it would be a pretty dick thing to do.

Zomboid
Aug 9th, 2011, 05:33 PM
How is an homage or a parody a dick thing to do? And why are you linking me to that? Are you just being insufferable for the sake of it? Just stop, and save your pretty dick talk for non-Abobo threads :picklehat

I'm just saying that video game companies could find reasonable cause to order a cease and desist or threaten legal action agains fan games like this if they were charging for it. That's why games like I Wanna Be The Guy are free.:\

Yep, it's all done straight in Flash using AS. It's definitely pushed the limits of what Flash is capable of and takes forever to compile at this point.

The game finally has a release date and they added a great countdown clock to the site. :rock
http://www.abobosbigadventure.com/
Heheh, glad you like the countdown clock. Feels surreal to have a date finally set after all these years. I can't believe it's this close to coming out.

I noticed there was a counter on Newgrounds set for the 11th, why isn't it on I-Mockery as well?
I'll probably put it up on I-Mockery after the holidays. The homepage already links to the Abobo site as it is and I have a lot of Xmas stuff on there currently. Don't want to over-clutter the homepage atm.

Has a flash game ever received so much hype, or is this a new record?
Nope, not that I'm aware of. Consider how many years it's been in development, how a custom arcade cabinet was built for it and exhibited at various conventions, how we have a full trailer for it, how there's a custom web site for it, how there's a twitter account and facebook fan page for it, and how it's been featured on virtually every gaming site out there.

This is a love letter to the glory days of 8-bit NES games and is meant to be the wet dream of anybody who grew up on those games or simply likes them.

On top of all that, we're giving a free spin-off game about Abobo's son, Aboboy, to anybody who has been nice enough to donate to the game.

We've had no boss pressuring us for a release all these years, no worries about getting it approved by ratings boards... it's all been on our terms and I think people can see the fun we've had making it all this time. It's that kind of stuff that (hopefully) shows on things like the trailer 'n all, and I think that's what has people so excited.

We're trying to give people a retro gaming experience that they will never forget for the rest of their lives, and they're getting it for free. If that's not worth a little hype, I don't know what is. ;)

There's another review here:
http://jayisgames.com/archives/2012/01/abobos_big_adventure.php

While I am here, I should also tell how to get the secret achievements:

1. Duck Hunted: During the intro, some ducks will fly around while the camera pans up. Use your mouse to click a duck and get the medal.
2. Headbanger: In the level select, rapidly alternate between "Super Mabobo" and "Contra Abobo" until the medal appears.
3. Bobo Battle: Beat the game, go to the Unlockables menu under "Achievements" and select "Battle Mode".
4. Best Ending Evar: Beat the game and watch the entire ending.
5. Luckdragon: Beat the game, go to the Unlockables menu under "Achievements" and select "Luck Dragon Lunacy".
6. Private Party: In the "Double Drabobo" level, before entering the boss room, approach the rightmost wall and walk up the pipes.
7. Thriller: Haven't found it.
8. Friendly Foes: In the "Urban Chabobo" level, wait during the "Finish Him" screen. Instructions will come up telling you how to perform a Friendship.
9. Another Castle: In one of the rooms with skeletons during the "Zeld Abobo" level, there is a crack in the southward wall. Destroy it and follow the path to find Toad from Super Mario Bros.
10. Kill the Messenger: In the "Zeld Abobo" level, when you reach Mr. Informer (the man who tells you the Old Man's weakness), stab him.
11. Sneaky: In the "Zeld Abobo" level, enter the Old Man's room without killing Aquamentus.
12. No Filming: In the "Pro Wrabobo" level, while you're outside the ring during the battle with the Amazon, attack the cameraman.
13. Bloodsport: In the "Pro Wrabobo" level, while you're in the ring during the battle with the Amazon, attack the referee.
14. Surf's Up: In the "Pro Wrabobo" level, at the beginning of the Balloon Fight sequence, Thrilla Gorilla will surf by. Attack him to get the medal.
15. Jason Lives: Haven't found it.
16. Fire Bad!: Haven't found it.
17. Double Trouble: During the "Contra Abobo" level, while in normal gameplay, press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right. The Two-Player mode should appear.
18. Thanks Doc: In the "Punch Abobo" level, there's a secret health recovery just like in the original Punch-Out!!

Pro Wrestling was an AWESOME game back in the day. The Amazon, Star Man, Kin Korn Karn? Absolutely classic. Between that and Tag Team Wrestling, I thought the NES had some true wrestling gems.

You have to grapple to do good moves to your opponent though (example: A + Down = Piledriver). Otherwise you're just punching and kicking. And don't worry, you'll be well rewarded for beating the Amazon, as it's one of my favorite boss deaths in the entire game.
