Finished my first assignment as a chocolate taste-tester and it was fucking AWESOME.
It's Friday, so I baked challah this morning and stuck a roast in the crock pot with red wine, garlic, carrots and potatoes. The house smells great.
I'm liking this particular challah recipe because it doesn't have to be kneaded. It's also great bread because you just pull off a chunk and it's like a dinner roll...you don't have to slice it and deal with the crumbs.

IM AFRAID OF NEW THINGS
Well, I like drunken noodles but you might want to be sure how spicy you want them. I get mild. I am just not a hot foods person and I know it goes against Thai food. However, even the mild has a bit of spicyness.
I don't know how the restaurant near you makes it but I got the chicken kind. Here's the description of the dish: "Fresh thick rice noodles stir-fried with fresh chili pepper, onion, red & green peppers basil leaves, and your choice of beef, pork, or chicken"
If you are a Thai newb, get mild and work yourself up. I would advise against green curries unless you want a shock to your mouth. My husband loves green curries.
I recommend Pad Thai - very basic and not hot at all. Drunken noodles are great but get mild so you can judge the heat of the restaurant's dishes.
Never order ped ped or Thai hot because that means make it hot and some restaurants go overboard.
Here's a picture if you are curious (I am one of those silly people that snap their food):

My god, I almost puked in a chinese restaurant today.
They're hazardous when you are allergic to shellfish because you never know what's going to have crab or shrimp in it. The buffet is dangerous because people drop stuff that has seafood into other stuff, so I try to order off the menu if I have to go to a chinese place. Even then it's not a given that you'll be safe.
Anyway, I ordered a healthy dish off the menu and the waitress was all "OK YOU WANT CHICKEN, CHICKEN YES" and I was even pointing to the fucking chinese on the menu by what I wanted, and she kept shaking her head and going to the back of the menu where it said WHITE MEAT CHICKEN LUNCH. Finally I figured she must be saying it's the same thing as the grilled chicken and veggies I wanted, so I nodded yes, fine.
Then she was all "FRY RICE WHITE RICE OKAY", so I told her white rice. She came back with the biggest fucking plate of hideous deep-fried chicken fat chunks I have ever seen. The oil smelled rancid. It was accompanied by a greasy pile of pork fried rice and there was some crab rangoon balanced on top of it all.
When I tried to tell them it wasn't what I wanted, they said "OK YOU HAPPY ENJOY" and then went off and fought with each other by the buffet.
I learned my lesson, after trying to eat that greasy pile of shit. From now on, just going to take my chances with the buffet.

I would've left. And it's been a while since I've eaten at a legit Chinese joint. All the stuff they make around here comes out of boxes or jugs and reheated. Ironically, some of the best Chinese food I've eaten has come from podunk Lawton, Oklahoma in a place that was probably more Korean than anything else.
Honestly, since I've been able to make fried rice and teriyaki meats at home, I haven't been back.
My fave is sukiyaki. And I put some oyster sauce in my rice, but it tastes good without, Kitsa.

If I can help it, I won't eat at any Chinese takeaways. Cheap cuts of meat, lots of oil, lots of sugar. It's just gross. I would rather eat at P.F. Changs and yeah I know it isn't a true Chinese restaurant but rather Fusion but at least you get better cuts of meat and more veggies. Hopefully there are some Chinese restaurants elsewhere that are doing it up right for the others.
I like Korean Bulgogi. I can eat Kimchi. There are only 2 Korean restaurants in my city and they are ok. I make my own bulgogi. I am hopefully going to start making my own Kimchi because the stuff in the jar just sits too long and gets sour. I don't really sour Kimchi. I like it fresh.

I had a Tim Horton's chocolate chip muffin with some extra-strong coffee for breakfast. I was up late doing all the prep work for Thanksgiving so I could just shove the majority of it in the oven today. Last night I:
- cleaned, dressed and prepped the turkey (including chopping the mountain of mirepoix)
- roasted chestnuts, chopped them, and made an experimental new chestnut stuffing recipe (smelled good when I added the herbs to the butter...we'll see)
-stewed my special-recipe cranberry chutney on the stove for about 8 hours and continually added liquor to it...
-made yam casserole (whipped yams with a crumble crust of brown sugar and pecans)
-baked and cooled two pumpkin pies
So today all I have to worry about is the mashed potatoes, brussels sprouts, and peas.

Kahl, don't you build a tolerance?
I tried taking a Percocet once (prescribed) and the itching drove me insane. I'm told that's a fairly standard reaction due to histamine release.
Oh, food thread. I slow-roased some chicken breasts in a crock pot all day, then pulled them apart and cooked them some more in barbecue sauce. Then I used the chicken stock to season some green beans.
The flourless chocolate torte kicked all manner of ass, it was wonderful. It uses quinoa instead of flour...I had my reservations, but it's so moist and rich and about halfway between a really moist brownie and a chocolate souffle. Definitely a keeper recipe.

I can't eat Cheesecake Factory food because of the MSG. I get palpitations AND a migraine, which makes for a really fun postprandial experience. We once asked if there was anything on their menu that didn't have MSG....the waitress disappeared for almost 20 minutes and came back saying that they might be able to make a special burger with nothing on it that might not have so much MSG.

Only wankers would do that. I don't know what you would call them in your country but I think the closest thing would be a cross between a jock and a redneck. The type of people that would eat a prawn pizza to be patriotic.
Kitsa
Feb 21st, 2011, 07:13 AM
It's patriotic to eat prawn pizza? There are so many things I don't understand.
I thought there was a different Australian word for redneck but now I can't remember it.
Zhukov
Feb 21st, 2011, 09:26 AM
There is a certain type of person that thinks it is. The same type of person that thinks wearing an Australian flag as a cape and having a tattoo of the Southern Cross is patriotic.
The term you may be searching for is Bogan or Westie. Same as Chav, Ned etc.

This is day 3 of Indian food because Mr. Kitsa spent NINETY DOLLARS (that's the refrain) to get fresh versions of the ancient spices I had, and dammit if he had to spend NINETY DOLLARS on food we're going to be eating it until it's gone.
Day 1, I made homemade cheese, homemade sauce base, a veggie dish and a sort of a CTM thing. And rice, and bread that took 4 hours.
Day 2, I made a chickpea dish, a veggie dish, and more rice. And more bread.
Day 3, I made navrattan korma, spicy scrambled tofu, and more rice.

I tried their "Hint o Lime" and nearly gagged. It was an unpleasant surprise, since Chipotle has a version that they manage to pull off. That's real lime juice, though.
I am eating brown rice and Makoto Ginger sauce. I love the hell out of Makoto ginger sauce. Years ago, I went on a diet and all I ate was salad with the ginger sauce, skinless chicken breasts and tenderloins, and chicken broth. Maybe some sugarfree pudding if the sweets craving was driving me nuts. I lost like 70 lbs in 3 months. I was also swimming and exercising like a maniac, though. I don't have that sort of energy now and it was depressing that I couldn't seem to get past a certain size. I was just destined to be plump, I guess.
I got my garden planted and plan to eat lots of produce this summer. I've planted yellow and red onions, three varieties of red and orange bell pepper, three jalapeno plants, yellow and green zucchini/courgettes, lots of tomatoes (including some weirdo white and blue varieties), carrots, romaine lettuce, peas, green beans and wax beans. I also have a strawberry bed that's well-established and always produces a lot of tiny, sweet berries.
Hell of a lot of work weeding, though, since I'm in the cancer bonus round and don't do herbicides and pesticides.

Dry
4 tbsp flour

1 tsp baking powder
2 tbsp cocoa
Wet
3 tbsp milk
3 tbsp oil
1 egg
Mix all dry together, then mix all wet into dry to make batter.
Oil the inside of 3 regular size mugs or 2 oversized mugs. (Ceramic)
Pour batter evenly in mugs and microwave on high for 3-5 minutes, or until there is no liquid bubbling at the edges of the mugs.
Shake out on serving plates.
-------------
Cocoa can be replaced with the same measurement of any cook-to-serve pudding mix
Oil can be replaced with the same measurement of applesauce to make a less-fluffy and more moist fat-free version.

I usually just slip my bottom front teeth into the little crack and pry them open like an oyster after I'm done sucking all the salt off the shell. The only problems I encounter with pistachios are A, when there's a completely closed nut, because those shells are like fucking diamonds, and B, when I eat, like, 500 in one sitting, and saltburn my tongue so bad I can't taste anything for the rest of the week.
It's worth it, though, they're really the best nuts ever.
