Mr Zafaryab, 27, of Kingsbury, who owns a nursery and works in a medical supplies company, said he was willing to pay the £100 fine for parking on private land, without permit, behind a parade of shops in Copeland Mews.
Sounds quite reasonable. Hats off to this gent for sticking to what he feels right in his heart.

On Thursday evening, Mr Zafaryab's car was finally released after he paid £100. He said he planned to challenge the fine in court.
OH YOU LYING BAS.

In other news, in Straylia we have to vote for a new Prime Minister in the next day or two. Another one. I for one am sick of electing Prime Ministers, and I think this country has got jolly well enough of them as it is.

So these miners in Chile right, I heard that they wont be able to rescue them for at least a couple of months. That's fucking nuts that is.

I don't care if they have food, water, magazines or ipods down there; you would go nuts and kill yourself after that long underground.

Are they in the dark? Those poor bastards. Funny how every mining accident in China ends with nobody ever surviving and getting trapped, yeah, what a coincidence.

Blasted Child
Aug 25th, 2010, 05:44 AM
Yeah that Chilean mining story is quite intriguing.
I think they managed to get electricity from a vehicle engine (which sounds a bit dangerous, what with the exhaust fumes and all, but they probably know what they're doing) so apparently they have at least limited access to light.

I think this will be a very good chance to study human behaviour under extreme circumstances. Will they start chewing on each other? Will they hallucinate? Will they all turn gay?
To be continued.

Zhukov
Aug 25th, 2010, 06:36 AM
I once got locked in a change room for a good ten minutes, and I was clawing at the walls I tell you what. A friend locked me in there, and when I got out I chased him with the intent to kill him.

The human mind changes under pressure. Often for worse. It will be interesting to see how these Chilean miners react to the situation that they are faced with.

The news tells me that nobody wants to break it to them that they may be trapped down there for a little while. So they're just dancing around the issue with standard South American government aplomb

I think they have plenty of tunnel space to shit in, but only one habitable room.

Apparently a couple of them have already gone depressed. Doesn't bode well.

Would be really scary if this developed into some sort of lord of the flies scenario, where they'd all start killing each other while the rest of world could only watch, but not really intervene.

That was in Tasmania. Not as long stuck down there, but they only had a tiny space to live/shit in.

4-Year-Old Can Be Sued, Judge Rules in Bike Case
By ALAN FEUER (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/f/alan_feuer/index.html?inline=nyt-per)

Citing cases dating back as far as 1928, a judge has ruled that a young girl accused of running down an elderly woman while racing a bicycle with training wheels on a Manhattan sidewalk two years ago can be sued for negligence.
The ruling by the judge, Justice Paul Wooten of State Supreme Court in Manhattan, did not find that the girl was liable, but merely permitted a lawsuit brought against her, another boy and their parents to move forward.
The suit that Justice Wooten allowed to proceed claims that in April 2009, Juliet Breitman and Jacob Kohn, who were both 4, were racing their bicycles, under the supervision of their mothers, Dana Breitman and Rachel Kohn, on the sidewalk of a building on East 52nd Street. At some point in the race, they struck an 87-year-old woman named Claire Menagh, who was walking in front of the building and, according to the complaint, was “seriously and severely injured,” suffering a hip fracture that required surgery. She died three months later of unrelated causes.
Her estate sued the children and their mothers, claiming they had acted negligently during the accident. In a response, Juliet’s lawyer, James P. Tyrie, argued that the girl was not “engaged in an adult activity” at the time of the accident — “She was riding her bicycle with training wheels under the supervision of her mother” — and was too young to be held liable for negligence.
In legal papers, Mr. Tyrie added, “Courts have held that an infant under the age of 4 is conclusively presumed to be incapable of negligence.” (Rachel and Jacob Kohn did not seek to dismiss the case against them.)
But Justice Wooten declined to stretch that rule to children over 4. On Oct. 1, he rejected a motion to dismiss the case because of Juliet’s age, noting that she was three months shy of turning 5 when Ms. Menagh was struck, and thus old enough to be sued.
Mr. Tyrie “correctly notes that infants under the age of 4 are conclusively presumed incapable of negligence,” Justice Wooten wrote in his decision, referring to the 1928 case. “Juliet Breitman, however, was over the age of 4 at the time of the subject incident. For infants above the age of 4, there is no bright-line rule.”
The New York Law Journal reported the decision on Thursday.
Mr. Tyrie had also argued that Juliet should not be held liable because her mother was present; Justice Wooten disagreed.
“A parent’s presence alone does not give a reasonable child carte blanche to engage in risky behavior such as running across a street,” the judge wrote. He added that any “reasonably prudent child,” who presumably has been told to look both ways before crossing a street, should know that dashing out without looking is dangerous, with or without a parent there. The crucial factor is whether the parent encourages the risky behavior; if so, the child should not be held accountable.
In Ms. Menagh’s case, however, there was nothing to indicate that Juliet’s mother “had any active role in the alleged incident, only that the mother was ‘supervising,’ a term that is too vague to hold meaning here,” he wrote. He concluded that there was no evidence of Juliet’s “lack of intelligence or maturity” or anything to “indicate that another child of similar age and capacity under the circumstances could not have reasonably appreciated the danger of riding a bicycle into an elderly woman.”
Mr. Tyrie, Dana Breitman and Rachel Kohn did not respond to messages seeking comment.
This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:
Correction: October 30, 2010

An article in some editions on Friday about a lawsuit that claims an elderly woman was severely injured by two 4-year-olds racing their bicycles on a Manhattan sidewalk misstated the timing of the woman’s death. The woman, Claire Menagh, died of unrelated causes three months after she was struck, not three weeks.

Say the exact opposite of Colbert who is a comedian doing a news report in character.

These people are news reporters trying to be comedians but they're just ridiculous horrible. The one saving grace is that they have Oderus Urungus as an outer space consultant sometimes.

Nah, nothing will happen, nothing military or genuinely serious I mean. Nobody wants a war with the North except possibly the North.

The worst that will happen is some kind of sanction that they will try to make worse than what they already have in place.

They sunk a ship and killed 46 in March; nobody wants to commit to actual conflict, so DPRK is seeing what it can do. Probably just for kicks, but also because it needs to show off to it's own people that it's the one in control. The US/UN etc don't care if it looks like DPRK is in control, just as long as they keep going ahead with the special economic zones being set up in some areas that allow foreign companies to 'employ' North Korean slaves - for even cheaper than their Chinese counterparts.

Why would they want to assassinate the guy responsible for that?

There is the possibility that there will be conflict with South Korea, but it's a small risk to take. The nations of the world don't want Kim Jong Il out of power, they just want him to stop building nuclear bombs and stop trying to aggravate things.

"CHEEKTOWAGA(Da Buffalo airport), NY - Team Russia is now spending more time in Buffalo after being kicked off their flight early Thursday morning for being drunk. The team is now sobering up at the Days Hotel while they make new flight arrangements.
According to police, the players were thrown off of a Delta (http://www.wgrz.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=103411&catid=37#) flight scheduled to leave Buffalo-Niagara International Airport because members of the team were intoxicated. At that point the team and their equipment were removed from the aircraft.
The team was shuttled to the Days Hotel on Genesee Street to sober up area after their flight took off. The team general manager remains at the airport trying to figure out a new flight out of Buffalo for the players.

So birds are dying everywhere, officially. There's a bunch in Italy, now, and there's probably plenty of other cases in places where there've been unreported incidents. At least, I'd be willing to bet there are. So, without taking any effort to plot out a map or taking any effort to research and back up my points, I'd say it could be one of many reasons. Or a combination. There could be some mad scientist that decided to release a disease/toxin/whathaveyou into the air, letting the winds carry it along the jet stream and possibly even having it settle in the massive bodies of water where all these fish are dying off.

Of course, it could also be some superbug that's causing mass die-offs. Birds and fish are the weakest of the vertebrates, and I suspect that the CDC and EPA and a bunch of other three-letter organizations are dissecting and autopsying the fuck out of every one of these corpses, looking for all sorts of crazy known organisms, as well as contaminants and whatever - even though they've yet to announce anything. Or perhaps they have in the past hour or two and I don't know it yet. In any event, the absence of evidence is evidence in and off itself, no? That just opens up the possibility of it being something unknown.

So yeah, I pretty much just watched the Screwfly Solution.

Also, 15,000 lbs of beef fat escaped from a holding container and took a swim in the Houston Ship Channel. It looks totally gross.

This is one of the representatives who was on Sarah Palin's hit list those years ago for being against America or some shit, if you remember the image of the cross-hairs focusing in on where they live. Everyone on that list has been getting vandalized and harassed ever since, and this seemed to be inevitable. The violent rhetoric in this country is scaring people without good cause other than to push their own political views, and it is making the crazy people out there dangerous.

I miss the good old days when militia groups and white terrorists were thought as silly.

Pretty serious flooding in Queensland (http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/01/12/australia.floods1/index.html?hpt=C2). Apparently it's the worst in recorded history, according to the premier.

The Brisbane River, which cuts through the city center, was expected to rise beyond the record set in 1974 when it broke its banks, flooding more than 6,000 homes and killing 14 people.

This time, models predict that 19,700 homes will be "completely flooded" in Brisbane, which is home to more than 1 million people, and another 4,000 homes are likely to be affected in Ipswich, said Queensland Premier Anna Bligh.

"We are preparing for the worst natural disaster in our history," she said.

Just before the floods it was locusts, and just before the locusts it was drought. These Queenslanders do nothing but complain.

So I came across this ground breaking news today.

Antibiotics speed up recovery from ear infections (http://pagingdrgupta.blogs.cnn.com/2011/01/13/antibiotics-speed-up-recovery-from-ear-infections-in-young-children-studies-show/?hpt=T2)

Curing new things every day these scientists are. :fart

You know, that article is actually about not taking antibiotics. Which is bullshit. If I was prescribed the proper medication when I was 2-4 years old, I wouldn't still be getting chronic ear infections.
