Rez maybe it's because they were from sacramento and seemed to embody and embrace the same mediocrity that city shamelessly touts and avoids.

but i just hate them.

Well, they would sing a line and then like say "Ok now everyone sing along" or some shit like that. And nobody sang along. We all just stood there looking dumbfounded.
