WOAH lots of people seem to know a thing or two about the Insomnia. I usually have a hell of a time getting to sleep because I never have a regular sleep pattern. Sometimes I may be working late (i.e. getting home at around 6 AM after a hard night's gigging), or drunk, hungover, whatever. Thankfully, I don't think I've had proper, scary insomnia where you are completely awake, alert and ready for action, and suddenly you realise it's starting to get light and you haven't slept one little bit. My biggest problem however, especially over the summer where I worked for 3 months in a nightclub, was getting into a pattern of going to sleep around 2, 3, 4 AM and waking up at lunchtime, which was a really difficult cycle to break and made early nights IMPOSSIBLE. The only way is to be hard on yourself, and set your alarm early so you wake up at the proper time, then hopefully you'll be tired enough when you get to bed. If you do go to bed early but can't get to sleep, say "fuck it" and get up and do something. Watch a little TV, read a book, make a sandwich. You'll feel tired eventully. Once in bed, stop thinking. Sounds crazy, but when I get into bed my mind is always bubbling over with ideas - from computer game designs, to fictional sci-fi scenarios or even planning the next day. Because my brain was still active, it just couldn't switch off. So maybe counting sheep really is the answer. Whatever you do, don't take drugs. Both my parent's are pharmasists and say that sleeping pills can be split into two basic groups - those which play off a side effect which makes you drowsy (like hay fever medicines) and those which deaden the senses. Don't bother calling the doctor because sadly, there is very little medicine can do to. Only call your doctor if the insomnia starts to rule your life. You'll almost certainly be ok after a couple of days though, unless it's some serious insomnia. Just make sure you don't worry about insomnia, as it is this which is the most common cause of insomnia itself. |

When I saw someone with the screen name "Thesaurus" posted in this thread, I thought it was going to be a really bad character giving different synonyms for apathy ![]() |

Thesaurus | Well i would suggest watching some really crappy anime that has absalutly no violence, nudity, or good jokes. Puts me to sleep in no time. Works good if you have a spastic imagination and your convinced that Bill Gates (who originaly was Waldo from the "Where's Waldo?" book sieries, but is now in disguies), Martha Stewert (leader of a cult of house wives and soccer moms), and the Crocidile Hunter (who having no brains, is a zombie) have henchmen who are out trying to kill me cuz... I KNOW THIER LITTLE SECRET! 8-)

POW! ZANG! THESAURUS! You wouldn't even give the problem the gratification of acknowledgement. Thus it would never cycle around. |

Here's lovely bit of irony; Fatherhood completely cured my chronic insomia. I cn now fall asleep, any time, anywhere, pretty much immediately. At the same time, my kids both have really bad sleep 'issues' and wake up thee or four times a night each. If they're really in form, they tag team and I get maybe fifteen consecutive minutes of sleep at a time. The end result? I'm no longer insomnaic, but I don't get anymore sleep. AIN'T THAT A KICK IN THE HEAD!? |

I get it, so, kellychaos is saying that apathy eventually leads to interest and concern! I'm hoping that this cycle will lead oneself to a dictionary, whereby oneself might approach the definition of fancy words. |

Spectre X | I have the perfect solution. when I can't sleep, I go read The Name of the Rose. it's a difficult book, but, just about any book with small letters will do, then go read, and try to keep reading for as long as possible, you'd get more tired every second, and when you put it down after a while of sleeping, you're gonna fall asleep. it works (I hope)

... Eat a fresh avacado and drink a cup of warm milk. Before going to bed, stretch your arms above your head for about 10 seconds. When you get in bed, slap your eyes for about 2 minutes. It never fails. |

Ninjavenom | I don't know about long term insomnia, but on night's when you simply cannot sleep, try sleeping at the other end of the bed. Works every time.

... I battled insomnia a few years back when I was heavily retrospective and emotionally intense. After about three months, I got so fed up with not sleeping I said "fuck it." I just didn't care anymore. After that I started sleeping better. Apathy is a cure-all. |

Yes, but does it work? MY parents seemed to favor the "Cold Beer" approach. |
