mburbank Ashcroft perjured himself. I imagine they soft peddled the questions becuase they didn't want to appear partisan, and the report is going to bury him.

He claimed he increased the counterterrorism more than any other budget under his control. That this is untrue is a matter of public record.

This is no longer a matter of falling on his sword, something he didn't do. He lied under oath over a matter an internet search of public records can prove. He needs to resign.

KevinTheOmnivore The pre-testimony release on the FBI and the Justice Department looks really bad for Johnny. I'm going to stick to my "sword falling" theory, and see what happens.....

mburbank I don't think any of those valid points carry as much weight as Ashcrofts importance to the religous right.

Bushes don't lie anyone falling on their swords ever in any case, but if anyone does it will be Louis free or George Tennet.

Ashcroft testy moany: will he fall on his sword?

Predictions are needed. Will Johnny take one for the team?? Reasons to believe he just might:

- He will undoubtedly be called out for the $58 million dollar FBI request he shot down, on 9/10/01, of all days.

- Even the conservative pundits and radio muckrakers have been attacking the FBI's handling of this. This, in my opinion, is an attempt to divert attention away from the August 2001 briefing.

- There have been rumors of a mix up at the Justice Department for at least a year now anyway. If Ashcroft puts the blame on himself, resigns, they can place "America's mayor" in his slot. Guliani will certainly not dismiss the importance for counter-terrorism funding, since his city was most directly harmed by 9/11.

etc. etc......
