MK2 Anti-theft Arcades

Even though this is older than Vanilla Ice I want to know about it since when it came about I was too young to care.

Why did they have anti-theft plates on MK2 arcade machines? Thiefs would take the circut board of the game and often leave the money behind. Can somebody explain the logic of that to me?
