Royal Tenenbaum The army gives poor people jobs. Why should we want rich kids to join the army and take jobs away from people unqualified to do anything else? The army offers employment opportunities and people aren't forced to join it. If anything, we should all be supporting a draft which will at least put some randomization into who gets sent off to war. Of course the rich may, and probably will, avoid it through post-secondary education, but at least it will make everyone who just "doesn't care much about the war" pay attention. If a draft is instated at least a majority of Americans will be at stake and the war might mean something to more than a fraction of the population.

mburbank Well, I'd really like to send congress and the President and his pals to Iraq, but they're all too old.

The point is, our elected representatives have nothing on the line. They're saying "It's a noble cause for YOU to die in, not me, for your kids to die in, not mine." And since this is the first war where we didn't have a draft, AND we didn't raise taxes, It costs these bastards NOTHING to have a war.

AS I understand it, there is only one Congressmans son that is currently serving in Iraq...one. I wonder how many congressmen - senators have children old enough (or young enough) to serve....

Supafly345 My parent's don't have any kids in harm's way. Nurses and Motivational speakers aren't known for pressuring their chldren into going into the military though, and they've been getting a lot of critacism.

Zero Signal I think perhaps if Senators' children were sent to Iraq and face possible destruction in their quest to spread democracy to an area that unstable, they just might rethink sending others around the world to do their expansionist bidding.

Royal Tenenbaum "Maybe because we live in a country that has a standing army that is populated with people who chose to join the military?"

But for whole much longer...?

They need to do military service or come out against the war.

If it's so damn noble to die for your country in war, how come no Bush child has gone to one in the last tweo generations? Can we assume they have no pretensions of nobility?

Get those girls some substandard body armor and ship 'em over.
