I just thought, at first, that you took some of the ... umm ... ill-informed opinions about Down's a little close to heart. That's all. I'll be the first to admit that I know little about the syndrome. Then again, everyone has their own irritants that, for some reason or other, strike the wrong chord with them. I know a few handicapped people and it can be sticky in knowing how to handle my interactions with them. I had a "heart to heart" with a guy I know who's handicapped and he kind of explained it like this (I'm paraphrasing a bit here) "You hate when people stare because it makes you feel like a freak. You hate when people avert their eyes because, again, it makes you feel like a freak. Yet you can't ignore the handicap because it DOES exist. The best thing to do is to ignore the problem, to a degree, but realize that, in some cases, we are going to need help ... just don't overdue it."

I thought that the idea of dragging it into an "emoticon war" was much funnier than laughing at the original concept of the thread ... but, think what you want to think ... you're going to anyway.

James I laughed at the concept. Then again, I laugh at all sorts of concepts; from Black History Month to having stereotypical Chinese people on Barney.

On one hand, we're trying to become a world of understanding, who don't judge one another by their skin or cultures, but for who they are. And then on the other, we're pointing out all the shit that makes us different from one another.

And that's where the dolls come in. If they're for teaching children, all you're teaching them is that these people are different from you. Then you kid will probably go up to someone with DS and shout, "You are different because you have Down Syndrome!"

On the other hand, maybe the reason they don't look all melonheaded and drooly (no offense), is to try and say that they're just like you and me, and not pointing out the overly obvious characteristics.

In the end, you're just playing tug of war with yourself; Both hands pulling on opposite ends, and getting nowhere. So I will just continue to laugh at this idea. Because let's face it; If I laughed at real retarded kids, Doopa would stab me in the face.

FS Anything endorsed by Chris Burke is a-OK in my book.

I have to agree though, if I didn't know beforehand I never would've guessed these are dolls made to look like Down Syndrome babies. I think it's that they don't appear to have eyelids. The most distinctive feature on people with Down syndrome is the kind of oriental eyes (blah, someone find me a politically correct term).

Anyway, I know that woman is blind and all but someone should really tell her that her webmaster can't optimize .jpg files for shit :cruel

Also, post 1000. How significant.

Mockery Not of all people with Downs, but many of them have that, yes.
Apr 9th, 2003 04:22 PM
whoreable but a scar to indicate open heart surgery?

maybe I am just ignorant but is this really a charactaristic of downs?
Apr 9th, 2003 03:57 PM
Anonymous yes the dolls are ridiculously priced
and no I don't think they look great

no little things like a crease in a palm aren't that noticable - but the reason she made them like that is to teach people about those little characteristics.
But people with down's do look noticably different and do have standard features, and I don't think the idea behind having a doll that reflects that is such a laffable idea.
And don't think that people with down's don't know they look different. They do. They know who else out in the world has down's and who doesn't just by looking at a person - just like everyone else does.

Les Waste Response to Doopa:

I think you're right about different races buying their children dolls that look like them, but I don't think that logic really works with down syndrome children. When I showed someone that link, they said they thought it was a joke because the dolls didn't look like they had down syndrome, and really the differences between the down syndrome dolls and regular dolls aren't that great.

And you're assuming people with down syndrome recognize those differences. Almost all people with down syndrome know they're different, but that's almost always because of the way other people treat them. I don't really know for sure, but I can't imagine people with down syndrome realize they're different from everyone else because they have horizontal creases along their palms and the gap between their big toe and 2nd biggest toe is bigger than most people's. Hell, some of the differences are almond-shaped eyes, small mouth, shortened toes and fingers, and flattened bridge across the nose. I know people who don't have down syndrome who have facial features like those.

So, basically my point is that I don't see the point in spending nearly $200 to buy a doll with down syndrome when you could just buy a teddy bear. Hell, most baby dolls look grotesque and nothing like people with or without down syndrome.

I dunno, that's just my opinion. Although I find it hard to knock anything endorsed by Corky from Life Goes On.

whoreable my poor face
Apr 9th, 2003 02:53 PM
Anonymous I do not see what is funny about those dolls (except for fatsatans joke about the whore makeup, and that the woman that makes them seems kinda creepy). What is so funny? If I ever had a child with a disability I think it would be good to buy them adn their siblings a doll like that. People of other races different from being whiteys buy their kids dolls that look like them. It all makes sense and I don't see anything unusual about that.

What is "funny" is how the most moronic people that post on this board flocked to this thread with their brownie pictures and their emoticons. I'd love to stab all of you in the face
