Ok, from what I've read, if you upload an animated .gif that isn't within the allowed dimensions (130x130 pixels), the forum software can actually disable the animation when it resizes the image. MattJack, your avatar was 140 pixels in height, so if you can redo it at 130 pixels height (or less) that should (in theory) make it work. Not promising anything, but give it a shot.
EDIT: If that doesn't work, we might need to install ImageMagick 6 on the server. So let me know how it goes.
