KevinTheOmnivore I think it all depends on where you live. Do you have a renters/tennant association nearby? If you do, you should talk to them. Renters tend to have more rights than they would believe, but owners are pretty good at making it seem otherwise.

Talk to them, or if not, it might be worth it to talk to a lawyer. You might be able to squat the place for a certain amount of time if your landlord doesn't have all of their t's crossed and i's dotted. Do a background check on them ,see if they even have the grounds to evict you (NYC has CRAZY rent laws like that).

RaNkeri Well, you could hope that his parents have some common sense and inform them about your (and your ex-roommate's) situation. If I'd owe a huge amount of money, my parents would definitely make me gather the money some way.

MetalMilitia Here if somone moves out it becomes your responsibility to either pay their portion of the rent or find someone else to live with you.
Assuming thigs are similar over there it sounds like you are at fault and there isn't much you can do about it.

Roommate Troubles

Long story short, my roommate got kicked out of school, dragged back home by his parents, and owes alot of rent.

The greedy management that recently took over our apartment complex has filed a court case against us to get the money, but recently reopened it to include my former roommate (because the last landlord somehow didn't completely take her off the lease...). Which is pretty juvenile but money's what counts to them.

Because of this, he's said I won't be able to renew my lease in August. Now, I'm going down today to get this all taken care of, and I'm prepared to pay the debt in full ($1,800) out of my own pocket to get it dealt with swiftly, but since I'm going to handle this like an adult, somehow, I feel like since I have been paying my rent, I shouldn't be labeled guilty by association with a shitty roommate and should be allowed to renew in August.

Is there anything I can do to change his mind? Does anyone have any advice cause this has really been racking my brain. I joke around alot but this time, it's a really serious matter and I need all the advice I can get.
