pac-man Guys calm down. Both of your countries are terrible. Just keep sending us your comedians, laborers, and professional wrestlers, and we'll take care of the stereotyping.

Dimnos You could just hire a mexican chick to come clean for you. You wouldnt have to worry about her starting a fire, just stealing your shit.

pac-man If it won't fall down stairs it won't go into a fireplace, especially if there's something blocking the fireplace that's bigger than the roomba itself. The invisible barrier is a backup at least. I doubt they spontaneously combust or else there would've been recalls. Just keeping the damn thing out of fire should keep it from igniting anything.

Fathom Zero That would all be great, except for the fact that the Roomba comes with a way to set up invisible barriers. Either it stores where it can go in its memory or there are little towers that connect wirelessly and block it, I never bothered to learn which. I assume it's the former.

pac-man I think I've got this figured out. Put something in front of the fire place that is taller and wider than a roomba and put out the fire completely before you use the roomba. Bolster that with the invisible barrier. If it finds a way in there after that then we've all got bigger problems than burning plastic.

RaNkeri How 'bout just doing all the cleaning by yourself you lazy bastard?
Feb 26th, 2009 02:27 PM
Evil Robot The problem is that they tend to focus on the dirty areas, and the fireplace has a good deal of ash in front of it and in it. The roombas programming would result in it being drawn to the fireplace and fascinated by.

Zhukov Metal Militia's idea sounds like your safest bet so far, and unless you plan on upgrading the armour or strenght of the fire-place guard roomba, I would suggest setting at least two roombas to the task.
Feb 25th, 2009 03:44 AM
MetalMilitia You could somehow re-program a second roomba as either a fireplace guard or fire-extinguishing robot.

Pyromaniac roomba

I have been thinking about getting a roomba since we have 3 dogs. Only one problem, we have a ground level fireplace. I have pictured a scenario where a roomba enters the fireplace somehow, catches fire, turns around and wanders the room. It would be driving around dripping buring plastic on carpet, under wood end tables, next to couches, etc. I know I could put an "invisible barrier" or metal bar across the hearth, but it would always be in the back of my mind that it would find the ashes to irresistable and find a way in, then a way out.
