FartinMowler We had a good time here in Canada.. Candles and conversation.. the next day lined up 20 minutes for beer and passed all the panicked freaks trying to get gas (where the fuck are they going?) Had a bbq got drunk and enjoyed the piece and quite. Kinda missed the internet :/

glowbelly i was skeered that some kinda baddies were gonna break into my house and take my stuff, but they didn't because my boyfriend has a stun gun and my new kitten inky would ATTACK.

driving was surreal, though. i really wish people weren't so damn careless (LIKE LENOR). i almost got hit a couple of times by people who failed to even slow down at busted traffic lights. just so everyone knows next time this happens: when traffic lights are out, the intersection becomes a four way stop. OK? ok.

Esuohlim Our power just came back on about two hours ago. We didn't have running water for about 20 hours either. I had to READ under CANDLELIGHT.

Perndog It's when the power company isn't supplying enough energy (for whatever reason) and the voltage drops in an area; when it drops to nothing, it's a brownout. (As opposed to a blackout, where power is suddenly cut off instead of gradually decreasing.)

kahljorn Couple of different things, it's basically when power goes out momentarily, like 10 second outages. Or when a part of a powergrid goes out. Imagine flicking your tv on and off, that's basically a brownout.

Jeanette X What exactly is a brownout? I know I've heard the term, but the definition escapes me...
Aug 15th, 2003 06:20 PM
kahljorn We had brownouts on sunday of last week, it pissed me off cause I was playing simcity and my city kept getting destroyed by an unstoppable real world disaster. Ironically everytime I played my sims complained of brownouts.

Jeanette X Really now. It wasn't their fault. Personally, I'm pleasantly suprised that it came back so quickly, given the circumstances. Some poor overworked Canadian technician swearing at a computer screen gave CT its power back, and whoever you are, I thank you!
Aug 15th, 2003 11:23 AM
Daphne yeah but the lighting came from Canadian air space so it's our fault.

Rongi My sister got caught in a subway under the east river. And my uncle tried to walk home from the city. Yesterday was his birthday

I heard that lightening struck something in Niagra falls and it started overflowing.

Daphne Thank YOU for thinking we are that poweful!

FEAR OUR COLD BEER FUELED WRATH PUNY AMERICANS!

To all the American's who think we caused this, let this be a warning:We're sick of the fucking moose and hockey jokes, and we're not gonna take it anymore!

All kidding aside, no one knows why this happened, but I do think it's really petty that the American media is blaming us, especially since they are the same people who say that Canada is inferior technologically compared to the US all, the time.

Ah well, I blame the idiot who hooked everyone up to the same grid!

El Blanco There only 2 instances of looting in the Center of Civilization.

They both took place in Brooklyn (big shock). A sneaker store and a Rent-a-Center were broken into, but the cops busted the assholes.

Seriously, though, if I am gonna loot someplace, I'm shooting a little hire than a sneaker store and a fucking Rent-a-Center.

Thanks Canada for killing the power.

Daphne I'm lucky, I live about a 30 minute walk from my work so I got home about the same time as I usually do, except a bit more tired and a lot more sweaty.
It was kind of nice seeing the city pull together. This lady at a flower store was offering people water to cool down, but it was funny cause she had a thick italian accent and she said to us: 'you wanna sticka you head ina bucket?' I was puzzled at first but then decided to wipe down my face and neck and I thanked her for being so generous.

I also think it was cool the was lots of people took it upon themselves to direct traffic. What I didn't enjoy was that my neighbors were blaring their car radios until 1am, but what the hell, I'm taking the day off today anyway

Yeah, that's me. It wasn't that bad. More annoying than anything else.

samgambo Of all the 72396 people I've discussed life support during power outages with ... no one even thought that they might have a back-up.

I need more friends. :/ Maybe just smarter ones.

No fun.
They have back-up generators in hospitals, don't worry.

Jeanette X Ours just came back on. Apparently, lightning struck a power station in the Niagara area, and it screwed up their computers, despite the fact that the computers have software that is supposed to protect against this.
Well, it didn't work, so now they have to fix the grids one by one. :/

Miss Modular I live in Upstate New York, and we're one of the lucky ones. Thank God most of the people around here have NYSEG. I feel bad for the people on Niagara Mohawk (the people who were really affected).

McClain Not having electricity doesn't mean you have control.
Aug 14th, 2003 07:20 PM
AChimp AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

THIS IS JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER FROM YOUR NORTHERN NEIGHBOURS ABOUT WHO IS REALLY IN CONTROL.

Cap'n Crunch Damn, I wanted people to loot. It looks like it is coming back on.

James I thought it was our cable company.

I was playing MGS2: Substance, and everyone shut off... for about a second. Then everything came back on. This blew out one of my lightbulbs, and fried one of my modem cables.

Long story short, I replaces the rather-annoyingly-situated cable, and I'm not going to kill anyone, yet.
