Royal Tenenbaum Perhaps I'm just bored.

Drew Katsikas Whose opinions do you respect, RT? Everyone else just voices what they like, and people agree or disagree. You, on the other hand, make a point of calling everyone you have the least dissent with a retard scumbag nobody, who should immeadatley pick up a gun and blow their brains out. Chill out, it's just music. You just come across as a pedantic loser who's out to prove to everybody how sophisticted your tastes are. Instead, you just piss everyone of, and turn discussions into flame wars.

Royal Tenenbaum No, because Mock's opinion is probably the one I least respect in the whole boards. Which is sad, when you consider that you post here too.

Drew Katsikas You know when Mock bashes you, it's all over. Horaah! Couldn't agree more.

That's only because Steve Albini makes sure their cd's sound worse than their vinyl's.

Do yourself a favor. Leave the boards, you arrogant, elitist little simp. You offer absolutely nothing of value to any conversation, just as your tastes in the arts offer nothing of value to the listener or viewer 90% of the time.

Drew Katsikas Hey, back from vacation to reply to this little monster of a post I've created. I like collecting vinyl for a few reasons.

A. It's cheaper; I scored two Lou reed albums, the Deer Hunter Soundtrack, Southside Johnny, and a few more for under 9 bucks each, most under 3 bucks.

B. It's cool; come on, how can you not like owning the orignal of your favorite album, it's like a relic from the past.

C. They're nice and big, good hanging material. Where a CD is a small case, a record is like a work of art. It's like owning a little mural.

I don't really buy into the whole better sound thing. I'm sure it's there if it can be techincally explained, but I don't notice a difference.

Abe Slank I've got plenty of CDs but I still love vinyl. Sure you can't play it in a car but you can make a tape. Sure a tape sounds like hell, but it is it's own protective case (for the most parts).
Another reason I like vinyl is the flea markets. You can find some old stuff that most folks don't care about. Lucky me, I found some Eddie Peabody, dirt cheap.

Dole RT: Its a bit fucking sad to laugh at someone because they 'only have 200 cds'. So you have lots more, yes? what are the chances of a good proportion of them being absolute cack?

re:

I collect some vinyl. I have three sections...

Old (pre-1990's), obscure stuff... Probably around 150 lp's and 50 ep's.
Old (pre-1990's), popular stuff... Probably around 250 lp's and 400 ep's.
New stuff... Probably around 550 lp's and 150 ep's.

Nothing special, but if I had the money, oh boy... I must admit to buying cd when I can, unless the vinyl offers something special.

Royal Tenenbaum "My entire music collection is on CD (over 200 of 'em)"

You only have 200 CDs.

Cap'n Crunch My friend's parents have a whole bunch of vinyl. I think they have around 300 just in the one room, but I don't know about their basement.

crash0814 Crashthedumbass, that's clever.
Jul 28th, 2003 07:30 PM
Royal Tenenbaum " am almost completely willing to bet that any sound difference royal notices is purely in his head provided the systems are the same."

Did I actualy say I can notice most of the differences? No, I didn't. I merely schooled crashthedumbass's ass as to why vinyl is technically better sounding.

wreckreation If you wanna get down to it, DAT is the best format for quality. Thats why they mix it down to cd or whatever. Records were mixed down from reel to reels which are primitive DATs. I am almost completely willing to bet that any sound difference royal notices is purely in his head provided the systems are the same. The human ear only has specific ranges it hears between and specific frequencies it recognizes. No matter how well trained you are a few hz difference you will not notice. The compression could be better but with a good setup it sounds fine. Records only sound fuller because people bother to setup up record players to sound better and people don't seem to care as much about their cd systems sounding good. Dj's who play music for their profession are going to cd dj setups fast as fuck.

whoreable I would really like to start collecting some vinyls, but cds are so damn convienent. I mean you can easily copy and rip them and take them anywhere.

I would never give up the convienence of cds for records, but at the same time i would love to get a decent player to listen to at home. I have a hard time deciding which i like better as far as sound goes though...but then again what i have compared on probaly isnt the highest end stereo..

Mockery Eh, I prefer CDs to vinyl... I've always liked the sound of CDs better. That being said, there's a lot of stuff out there that's not on CD and can only be found on vinyl, which can definitely make it worth collecting.
Jul 28th, 2003 10:43 AM
Dole I only use WAX CYLINDERS
Jul 28th, 2003 08:24 AM
Blackjack Right, shut up, both of you.

I DJ and do sound engineering for bands, so I'm fully aware of the differents between CD, MD, DAT or your vinyl. Ultimately, it's a matter of choice.

CD's provide better quality sound and don't degrade with playing, but are easy to scratch to hell. Vinyl is pretty much indestructible but is easily overplayed. Also, vinyl has a nasty habit of scratching and popping on the track before you get to the main music. Vinyl is more fun to DJ with but is also a lot harder, whereas CDs just need putting into the player and pressing play. Easier to cue up to as well.

Vinyl is cooler because being wider but thinner, allows for cool album covers. CDs however, for all the shitty jewel cases which get broken easily, get a little booklet insead which is quite cute. My entire music collection is on CD (over 200 of 'em), and the only bit of Vinyl I own is an original 1986 Metallica "Master of Puppets" LP which I bought just because I love that album so much. I don't even own a record deck!

But I think the main difference is purely romantic. A vinyl is, after all, a piece of history. A CD is just a piece of plastic.
