glowbelly i had super fun! i met harlan at lisa's store in the early afternoon. he was cranky and complaining that his whole family was crazy. i didn't get to speak to him much, except that my friend margaret told him that i was his biggest fan. he replied that his biggest fan was a 600lb woman from idaho who follows him around all over the place. he then said "thank you" to me and i said "no, thank you" and he replied with "well, what do you say to that?" and turned away to bitch about his sunglasses.

i was supposed to go to a dinner that they were having for him across the street, but the mayor and other stuffy types were going to be there and i really didn't feel like hanging out in that kind of crowd.

at around 6:30 we headed over to the rock hall to hear harlan lecture about farenheit 451. he was absolutely hysterical and insulted just about everyone in the audience. he answered questions thoughtfully while mixing in his own style of humor. he also never stayed on one subject. his wife was extremely nice and sold me two of his out of print books for $20 (instead of $42). at the end of the lecture, after only mentioning at the very end that everyone should read farenheit 451, he signed one of my books and told me that he had to take a shit.

we were going to go out for a bit afterwards, but there was a huge line of people waiting for harlan to sign things and we didn't feel like waiting around.

lisa was invited to his home in los angeles and said that i should go with her. we shall see what happens with that.

Zbu Manowar And he's damn funny. Not in that Vonnegut 'critics think he's funny so he is' kind of way, but in a genuine way. Through if you do want to get on his good side, he is a fan of Doctor Who....unless somebody paid him a briefcase full of fifties to write the introduction in 'Masque of Mandragora.'

mburbank I'm sure in that setting he won't even try to make you cry.

Honestly, he was my first favorite writer, and the first writer who made me want to write.

Protoclown Watch out for his spiked chain though, he is a proficient wielder and it can deal out 1d4 hit points worth of damage.

glowbelly from what lisa tells me, he has made a turn for the better.

he never used to visit and now he has asked to come and meet her friends at a nice relaxing bar so he can have a couple of beers, eat some pizza and tell stories.

if he makes me cry, i will spit in his face.

mburbank If he's your friends uncle, odds on he won't try to make you cry. There's a whole club in science fiction writting sub culture, and to be a member, H.L. has to have made you cry in public. Is chock full of members.

On the other hand he's written some kick ass stories. For my money, "A Boy and His Dog" and pretty much everything in "Love ain't nothin' but sex misspelled" rock.

If he starts to get angry and turn red, remind him his Doctors have told him not to. I have also heard that when he wants to be he is charming and genteel.

If you want to see him turn red though, just say "I thought 'City of the edge of forever' was the best Star Trek Episode ever!"
