Couldn't this disaster be attributed to the ways we more commony teach children to read? When I tutored children, the emphasis was on blends and phonemic awareness.

Since we're already teaching children to look for sounds and blend them, this seems like a very likely next step-- make them sound how they look!

kahljorn "When they can talk, try teaching them the ABC's. Those 26 letters are the foundation of all knowlege in the English Speaking world."

On a similar note I think that english classes should be taught with a specific emphasis placed on root words, suffixes, etc.. The reason for this is that you can gain a better insight into the english language in general. If you understand that you can understand any word just by looking at it, without even ever having seen the word or the need to look it up in the dictionary. Why learn "words" at all when you can be learning the actual mechanism. Such a watered down education system.

And honestly it's not that hard to guess the pronunctiation of words within your own damned language, and even if you mess up you won't be far off enough that anybody but a peer wouldn't understand.

Pub Lover Does everyone in the US pronounce words the same way?

Where I grew up in the UK you only had to drive 50 miles down the road and everyone spoke with a vastly different accent.

Wales.

ziggytrix i'd be for this in principle if it weren't for the fact that the execution of it looks so damn retarded.

Pub Lover Hmm, I change my vote. I think it's a great idea and the US should do it, but the rest of us can carry on as normal.

Jeff The Ninja I think this proves how much people in the western world take Their own Education for granted. There are people in Third and even Second world countries who do not have the benefit , the privilage of attending elementary school. Much of the world is illiterate, and it pisses me off to see people try to dumb down education to "Make it easier".

Im all for getting kids to read. But I dont think that Changing the Spelling of "wurdz so dat dey r speld lik dey sound". I believe that the problem lies with the parents. Because the parent is the Childs first teacher.

I think to bring up literacy in children is to read with the kids. Get them to read early. You cannot expect all the teachers to teach all the kids to read. When they can talk, try teaching them the ABC's. Those 26 letters are the foundation of all knowlege in the English Speaking world.

If you start teaching children to spell Phonetically, you are also Imaparing communication using the written word. Ultimately Seperating The United States from Canada and the rest of the known world.

Ninjavenom Absolutely ridiculous. I find it vile and pusillanimous to know that there are douchebags who are confused by how utterly complex and incomprehensible our language truly is. Absolutely mortifying.
