sadie | i know i've only been back to teaching for a few weeks now, but already i'm quite sick of it. much of the problem has to do with my lack of necessary authority, though, i think. subs just don't carry the weight regular teachers do, regardless of their qualifications/experience. fourth period today had me smiling and biting my tongue, internally saying, "count. . .to. . .ten. . .deep. . . breaths. . .eye. . .will. . .not. . .twitch." >:

Yeah... Yugi, there's no reason to respond to every thread... just stick to a few good ones so that your posts aren't void of all meaning. You were doing fine in the other threads... now you're just being annoying |

yah, and it's not exactly my principles' all-time low or anything. :P sub journal, belated: yesterday morning from 9 to almost noon, i was in the little theatre classroom with all of my english 11 students: 48 of them, to be exact. they had to take a practice writing test, to prepare for the big ol' sol's that're coming up. (the acronym stands for standards of learning, but some students may be sol themselves. tehee.) just me. with 48 teenagers that're hard enough to keep quiet and seated in their three regular classes. no one came to check to see how things were going. i couldn't leave. we didn't have any spare pencils or dictionaries like we were supposed to. it was pretty crappy planning on someone's part, yes. and i'm glad i wasn't just a regular substitute and hadn't facilitated such tests before. today's fun:: me: (student), you need to raise your head. student: i'm not sleeping. me: regardless, i need to be able to see your eyes, no matter what color they are. (color: completely bloodshot. :O) student: (laughter and raising of head) and another:: student: what's the name of your band, (me)? me: i already told you. student: yah. and what does that mean? me: i'll leave you to ponder that on your own. student: i already know. me: (moving on to next question) heehaw. |

We all have to earn a living sadie, despite of any principles we may hev. I mean look at me, I gut senior citizens for a living. Its not nice, its not pretty but its for the best and it pays the bills. |

today the juniors get to watch the movie version of "the crucible"! with winona ryder! i'm sure they'll be overjoyed! i know i sure am! it's 8:30 and i was up throughout the night with the baby! an hour of sleep here and there! i can't wait for the bell to ring so i can enrich these adolescents' souls! with literature on the small screen! my determination not to work within the public school system--especially in virginia--dwindled little by little over time and now, here i am, ready and willing to beg for a full-time position. isn't it funny how stressful living conditions can weaken your resolve. . . |

And the kids are going to have to make up some days because of the hurricane, so they're hacking off some of the vacation time, instead of the other option, which was to make it up on Saturdays. Hahah, I guess no one wants to go to school on a Saturday. But either way i'm happy. |

Man, don't I wish. But public education will forever be a place you have to take your kid to, because it basically serves as daycare. |

FartinMowler | nO offense but most of my substitute teachers where useless. Hand out some photocopied assignments and leave the room for a coffee. I envision the future education system will end up being mainly from home and only once a week you will go in for testing.

One of my subs fronted a punk band and he used to break beer bottles on his head. At shows though, not in class, which would of been cooler. God, punk sucks. |
