Pyorrhea | adding a blanket to your bass drum makes it less boomy, which unless you play for a band called RATICUS, you wouldnt want... (props to Rog for that awesome joke from dead alive movie feature)

I don't have any pictures either but i've got a room full of noise makers. cheap student 3/4upright bass 78 fender fretless p-bass ibanez soundgear, with piccolo strings for chord fun fun baritone uke soprano banjuke tenor guitar lap steel melodica lap dulcimer autoharp thumb piano and fortunately a friend-drummer in one band leaves his kit at my house, and therefore I play them more than any of the above. if he takes them home, i'll cry. |

Its a pillow, and i dont really have a reason. It did absorb some of the bass, but then i took off the bass drum head to make the bass more powerful, and now the pillow is just kind of in there. Its been in there for well over a year. :/ |

I use it sparingly, mostly for fills. not constant metal duggaduggadugga type stuff. I used a double for about 7 years, then back to single for a few years, and have now switched back to double. There are some things you just cant do with a single, particularly when playing with a hardcore band. I am with you on toms, I only use one rack and a floor. Thats all you need. |

FartinMowler | I believe that Buddy Rich only played on a three piece set most of the time :/ Skill level does play a part in how many pieces but really it's all preference in what style music and what sounds you want to put out. You don't go out and buy a cow bell because it will make your set too big?

Actually, I said it because I think it's absolutely unnecessary. I think some of the best (in my opinion) drummers have played with smaller sets. I've seen way too many crap drummers use 6 rack toms and a double bass pedal as a crutch and think that they're really rockin' when the most complex fill they do are descending runs. Personally, I used one once and as I opined, completely unnecessary. I can play sixteenth notes with my right foot, up to a certain tempo and for a certain amount of time (which is just a matter of conditioning), anything faster than that I can use the floor tom in conjunction with the bass and still have my left foot free to tap out a rhythm on the high hats. |

"any kit with more than 5 pieces and more than one bass drum pedal is strictly for homos." -thank you for that reasoned, well thought out argument. I am HAPPY TO BE A HOMO if it means using a dbp. You're probably saying what you said cos you cant use one. I use a tama rockstar also...pretty good so far. |
