Dole Forget all the new surf bands, 99% of them suck (The Phantom Surfers aren't bad). Go back to The Ventures (but forget everything beyond 1967), Link Wray, AND OF COURSE the early beach boys.
Often the best tunes are on surf/garage comps from the sixties. 'Toes on the Nose' is amazing, but I think its very hard to get hold of.

The Jesus and Mary Chain have a strong surf rock influence. Imagine Beach Boys melodies smothered in walls of guitars, static and feedback. If you like them you'd also like Skywave who even have a few instrumental tracks that are almost pure surf rock (albeit noticably 90s) although those are nigh impossible to find on CD. You can order a tape on killerrockandroll.com. Sure, it's a cassete but the song Coast Drive might be exactly what you're looking for.

Sacks The Ventures are pretty much a given. Some of Freddie King's stuff is pretty surf-core (I always think of San-Ho-Zay when I see Dole's avatar).
