I was actaully refering to when you boot from teh cd and around the time when it says to press f3(i think) to install scsi drivers keep hitting f5(maybe f8) and you will have the option to choose whcih type of pc you have examples :standard uniprocessor, multiprocessor, acpi. Choosing standard uniprocessor pc(or something to that effect) should give you some extra irqs.

Yea I use ntfs these days, guess cause I never have to use dos anymore (cant access ntfs in dos).

Go with NTFS. You'll get more efficient use of your hard drive space, especially with really big drives.

Ahh cool. I heard that it becomes an issue with MIDI/audio sync because IRQs are shared. But if you can disable it (in BIOS I'm guessing?) that's decent. I hope it doesn't interfere with anything else performance-wise though. My concern is that the OS was designed for it, so disabling it will make the system suffer in other ways... but either way I guess it can't be worse than '98.

Good idea, I might try that. What about FAT32 vs. NTFS? Is that even an issue anymore?

Can't say I've had any audio (playing or recording) problems with Win XP. I haven't done much in a while, but when I was doing it, it seemed aok.

you can disable acpi when you install windows xp. I think you hit f5 during the begining of the setup.

I have not really heard of that issue but it wouldnt suprise me, but it also wouldnt suprise me if it worked too.

I would personally do windows xp right now. I dont know what kinda lan sharing you want to do or anything but I would think that xp would be adaquate.

I know this is the super nerdy time wasting answer but I would start with xp and if it works ok use it...if you have too many problems then switch.

Or are you actually gonna be buying an os?

I'm finally getting a new PC today (well, new to me) and am trying to decide whether to install 2000, XP, or 2003 Server. I don't plan on running a server anytime soon, but I heard 2003 Server had a cool application and resource sharing system for computers on a LAN. Anybody have any experience with it? I also plan to start getting back into audio stuff now that I'll have some power, but I've heard there are some issues with Win2000/XP and MIDI/audio processing (something about ACPI mode?)... anybody else into audio appz hear about this?
