kellychaos Cheese and crackers! I think my idiotic math flub made an excellent counterpoint to Deep Thought's ultimate answer. That's why I used it. Sorry to insult all you Hitchhiker nerds ... and, yes, I did read the books ... I sass where my towel is at!

davinxtk Argh. You totally missed the point of my post, jackass.

Pub Lover You really are stupid, '42' is explained in the final book, & you had a clue to it by the frog guy in which ever book Adams hamfistedly slammed him in.

:true hhgttg superfan

davinxtk There are six books.
Nobody fucking gets the 42 reference. I don't think Douglas Adams himself understood why that took off so fucking well. It's such a minor fucking detail. Fucking fuck fuck.

Jixby Phillips I think half the people who get the "42" reference only get it from it being referenced so fucking goddamn much and have never read the book.

I get the reference, and I've never read the book.

ArrowX I got 12 for an answer. WOW they really must be out to get us canadians!
Apr 17th, 2004 10:55 PM
davinxtk Thank you kellychaos.

If I have to sit through the 42 bit one more time, I think I might stab someone.

That's, pretty much, all I was trying to remember. I, too, feel ashamed for not knowing simple math.

And the answer to life, the universe, and everything is ...

IS ...

ziggytrix i am ashamed

please don't tell my math teachers

kellychaos Aboot? I can't believe Fartin knows how to speak Canadian.
Apr 17th, 2004 01:18 PM
Ghost of Fraiser Order of operations, jerks

30/2 is 15

15x5 is 75

75-10 is 65

65 + 60 is 125

The order of operations are Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication or Division (whichever comes first), then addition and subtraction. [whichever comes first also.]

Keep in mind this was a question for fucking kids.
Apr 17th, 2004 01:05 PM
FartinMowler I can't believe you guy's are argueing aboot a math question.
Apr 17th, 2004 01:03 PM
kellychaos (30/2) X 5 = 75

30/(2 X 5) = 3

and 75 is not equal to 3. The associative law doesn't work for multiplication and division.
Apr 17th, 2004 12:58 PM
AChimp No, it's 125. Trust me. Just read it right to left. There's never a trick with those questions (like going into negatives).

EDIT: Chances are they have a couple different "right" answers, though, just in case someone interprets the question differently.

Like I said, it's a token math question. They're always powers of 2 or multiples of 5. If they meant to divide 30 by 10, they would have put brackets around the 2 x 5.
Apr 17th, 2004 12:55 PM
ziggytrix (a*b)/c = a*(b/c), you math noob!

and, yeah, the answer is 53.
Apr 17th, 2004 12:53 PM
AChimp Goes by the order. Those questions never mess with order of operations, though.

AChimp I'm such a ruiner.
Apr 16th, 2004 12:44 PM
davinxtk AChimp, you ruined an awesome fucking awesome with a perfectly reasonable answer.

AChimp Canadian law requires a skill testing question in order to give things away for free in a contest. If there was no skill-testing question, then it would be classified as a game of chance (ie. gambling) and subject to a whole bunch of other laws.

They put simple math problems on to avoid the paperwork.

EDIT: Some contests ask you the question when you go to pick up your prize rather than putting it on the entry form.

Dr. V Hmmm, now I just don't get that one.
