Rather than say this man is getting too much publicity, I'd say that the "common" soldiers aren't getting enough. This is just an unusual case that the media chose to jump on but, if it serves to keep our military members serving overseas fresh in our hearts and minds, then I'll concede that the ends justifies the means in this case.

KevinTheOmnivore If the word "fungible" isn't political suicide, then neither is the word "draft."

I do however tend to agree with you, I just have a problem calling the discussion "rhetoric." It isn't rhetoric, there are several people in elected office who are lobbying for this, and probably many more who would do so if they didn't think it was (as you said) "political suicide."
Apr 23rd, 2004 10:10 PM
El Blanco It is always brought up. But as soon as a politician hears it, he also hears the words "political suicide".
Apr 23rd, 2004 08:50 PM
Bobo Adobo I know thats Rhetoric(probably shouldn't have posted it but I need something), but it is a fact that Chuck Hagel and others have spoken about the draft. People are trying to find ways to improve America's Standing military.

I'm not saying there will be a draft, I'm just saying the fact that people are actually concidering it is sorta disturbing.
Apr 23rd, 2004 07:36 PM
KevinTheOmnivore Oh now that's just rhetoric, Bobo! Enough already! They're ignorant, that's ignorant!

Bobo Adobo http://www.e-thepeople.org/article/31188/view?viewtype=

Senator Chuck Hagel, along w/ a few other senators, Democrat and Republican, have been discussing the options of improving America's standing military. A draft has come into concideration.

Who? One congressman? The draft is brought up every session of congress. The only reason we hear so much about it now is because we are in major conflicts and we have the internet to tell us what everybody says on their way to the crapper.

DamnthatDavid Afghan is cooling down internally, and only external violence is keeping any sort of flame burning.

Iraq is going to explode in our faces. I say, set them up with another imperialistic dictator, and warn him that if he screws with the U.S., we going to nuke his country next time.

And I feel that Pat is now a hero. Someone you can admire. He was already set up with money, women, cars, and he brushed that aside to fight for his country. How many people, honestly, can do that? Not many. And that makes him a hero, dead, but still a hero.

Bobo Adobo I don't think there will ever be a draft either, but more and more people high up in the government are thinking it would be a good idea. They say the Military is just full of "blue collar" kids.

Edit - Not to mention Spain, along with other coalition countries pulling out of the conflict.

I could easily see Afganistan/Iraqi Conflicts going into another vietnam, violence has been escelating like none other in the last month. Its evolving into a big ol' shitstorm.

El Blanco Not another Viet Nam. No draft. Enough rhetoric.

Hopefully, people will hear about this and it will bring the war home a little more for some people. I'm a big sports fan and follow football closely, and this has made me think about the families of everyone who has a son or daughter there.

Hopefully, people won't turn this into petty squabbling and a chance for posturing and instead look at this as an example of someone being about more than just himself.

Royal Tenenbaum "I don't think this guy's death is any more or less tragic than all the others, non-Americans included."

Good point, in fact, he may be even more idiotic than the other people that join the army, since he gave up millions of dollars a year instead of giving up living in a trailer and working at McDicks. I know what I just wrote was ridiculously insensitive at the very least, and that it sucks to see anyone die. The reality is that thousands of people die everyday, and this guy joined an institution were in which the risk is even higher.

ps. I do at least have respect for the fact he died in Afghanistan, which is at least a war with some reasoning behind it.

edited because of Bobo!

Bobo Adobo But it is Trajic. All these people dying over there are just kids. I hate sounding all sappy.

I also hate seeing this escelating violence in these countries we are invading. It trully is turning into another Vietnam. I just hope they don't reinstate the draft. :/ I don't want to move to Canada yet...

Your post? About 10:30.

Your first thoughts? I-mockery. Where you belong.

mburbank And it's STILL not on Newsfilter! Shouldn't you bring them the news? Since it's not there 'yet', which was the 'only' reason you posted it here? It's not on your site 'yet' either.

I like 'art fag kike' though. It's a nice touch, and it makes the case that your the kind of guy who'd never do something cheap and sick like using a 'dudes' death to score points.
Apr 23rd, 2004 11:59 AM
VinceZeb Listen, you art fag kike. The story was first reported on CNN a good 15 minutes before anyone else had it. It was then a newsflash on drudge. Everywhere else wasn't even reporting on it.

I would never exploit this dude's sacrifice for petty reasons like you are doing now.
Apr 23rd, 2004 11:39 AM
mburbank Huh. That's funny. 'Cause it's still not on Newsfilter. You have a falling out with those guys?

And it's still not on your own site, but then nothing new is. Didn't you want all the folks that regularly stop by there to know?

No. You came straight here with the news when it was less than a minute old. It was the very first thing you thought of doing with the info. Because you're a bag of crap.

"Is your world so fucked up that you just try to get a rise out of me?"
That is exactly what you were trying to do, get someone to rise to the bait and say something ugly to you when you were innocently posting a tragic story. Except the bait you were uing was some poor 27 year old kids death. 'wasn't posted on here yet.' my ass. When you posted it, it hadn't even made it onto Yahoo headlines. You're the fucking Flash of exploiting tragedy. You posted it here whn the story hadn't even been confirmed. 'yet'.
