I've sort of been on a Streets of Rage high lately. After playing the second one with Chojin and beating it relatively easily, I downloaded it for my own Wii and played it with a number of people. I forgot that it's my favorite game on the Genesis and one of my top three of all time.
In celebration I looked around and found a really, really good remake. It's by
Bombergames, who I'd never heard of beforehand. Basically, what it comes down to is a remake of all three games, bringing together the six main characters (and two secret ones) and locations from all three games. There are branching paths (!!) and tons of unlockables, including the ability to create a custom color palette for your character of choice.
The combo system is highly reminiscent of SoR3, so if you're a Skate player like me, you'll have to get used to it. They've done a great job of bringing some of the most memorable locations from all three games, with one glaring exception (no alien tunnel with Vehelits and Zamza). It'll take a few minutes to get used to the remake's timing and combo style, especially if you play like me (punch, punch, grab, punch, punch, throw/suplex). You have to essentially grab someone from the front now, instead of being able to walk down at them.
What's even cooler is the fact that this is only the first release, and they're very much at work for a follow-up with all sorts of options for play, including the ability to use SoR3's weapons system, it's special-gague system, etc.
