Hello? That's what the original Doom did, and that never hurt its popularity. You can't expect them to come up with a trillion ways to surprise your ass and keep you entertained for 20 hours when they spent 99% of their time building the engine. At least there's a plot this time.

From the technical standpoint, this game is a milestone. It's raised the bar for what FPS (and all games in general) are going to be expected to look like. It's a huge "F.U." to console games, too, because there isn't a console on the market that can compete with these kinds of graphics. The quality has to be cranked down to below "low" for it to run smoothly on X-box; just look at the screenshots and compare the two platforms.

From a gameplay standpoint, it's just like the original Doom. There's a few unique situations later on in the game, but no major innovations. I think it doesn't need them, though.
