I use VLC media player, it is free, ugly and smells. But it play EVERYTHING w/out codec problems.
A note: If this .AVI is coded as XVID this can be the root of the problem, a time ago my laptop hung simply listing a folder with a XVID file I simply uninstalled the XVID thingy and installed the actual version, the problem died fast but painfully for him.
