I don't know that neo-conservatism could be called devoid of psychological substance all together. After all, a large portion of the movement's founders were ex-communists who longed for the benefits and freedoms that existed beyond the Bloc. It's old style conservatism that often sees no merit in getting wishy washy and emotional over the plight and suffering of other people.

War inherently is neither leftist nor rightist. Those are economic terms, that cannot describe any given war's pro or anit sentiment. Apples and oranges.

This was perhaps true prior to Vietnam, but good or bad, Liberalism has now become synonymous wit pacifism.

It's convenient for neo-cons to attack Fukuyama as a "bad neo-con," because then they don't have to engage his theories on iraq (some of which are just wrong, btw). You're right, grouping off into little camps seems silly, but it also tends to be politically expedient.
