Plague has been in the California mountains for like ever. I remember when I was in school watching a news story (because my Medical Anthropology professor was a lazy bastard and didn't lecture, just made us watch tapes of whatever medical stories were in the news) of a marmot or something that bit a schoolteacher's cat and gave her pneumonic plague somehow.

from what i remember in that article the plague is all caused by one type of bacteria called the yellowbeard pest. Bubonic, septicetic and the other ones just describe where the yellowbeard infection is.
