I agree, roughly half the country agrees, too. However, I do believe that they have a message problem. These need to own the message the way the GOP has.

The Republicans survived the early 90s with a Dem controled House, Senate, Supreme Court and presidency. Same as the late 70s. They didn't switch gears in order to win the North East or PacWest.

But the change had already been set in motion in the early 70s. Nixon and the GOP implemented the southern strategy, and we have finally just seen the full culmination of that strategy. There may have been Democrats in power in the early 90s, but it was changing, something started in the 1970s (and really with Goldwater) was brewing, and we saw that with Newt Gingrich. In some ways, the South has always been the key to political power in this country. The Democrats knew this for most of the 20th century, but are now on the receiving end of it.
And it's fals to say the GOP hasn't switched gears or moved into other territories. Look at New Mexico, look at the tight races in Minnesota and Wisconsin, look at even Hawaii, for God's sake. Heck, look at the vote disparity in New York. THAT WAS TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT!

I also think the morals issues thing is over blown. Remember, these were the same exit polls that were telling us that Kerry was winning handily early on 11-2

Either way, we have an ideological gap in this country. Whether it was religion, abortion, gay marriage, or terrorism, we clearly have a country that is popularly divided over the right policy approach on those matters (I realize that is quite simplistic, but things often need to be in a two-party system).
