he's a Democrat. If he can't serve, a Republican governor could take the senate from the Dems.

Oh, and hopefully the guy is alright.

The responsible thing for Governor Rounds to do would be to select, if it came to this, someone who reflected the same principles as Senator Johnson. The people of S. Dakota elected that man, theoretically, for what he stood for. The governor should honor that.

That probably wouldn't happen, but just saying....

in a perfect world, yes he would do that. But, my guess is he'll toss a Republican in there to pacify his party

Could he appoint an interim and then call for a special election in South Dakota?

It's unfortunate that no account of this doesn't explain the political situation in the first sentence, right after the human issue is quickly dispensed with. He's got kids and a family and hopefully a future.

How can someone who obviously thinks so much of their ideas have so little respect for expressing them? How can someone who so yearns to be taken seriously make so little effort?!

Well, it may seem crass, but the fact that he's a U.S. senator in a tight senate is the reason this is a front page story.

Things like this happen to people all around the world, every minute of every day. It's all for the most part tragic, but it's this guy's position that makes the story.

I would assume everyone hopes he's alright, especially for his family's sake (maybe I'm wrong in making that assumption).

Apparently MoveOn.org sent out an e-mail to their members asking that they send a get well card to Johnson. I dunno, that's a bit....creepy.

The media alrady has the poor guy retired and in a home. I wish they'd let it go, let the guy recover as best he can, and then worry about who controls the senate. Jesus Christ...

When will anyone learn to just leave personal information on a politician alone? Seriously, Many people have suffered from heart attacks and survived Fine, It seems likely he was put into a home to get out of the public view and have everyone jumping around wondering whats going to happen when he dies!

Sure, I think the government is cracked anyway. Surprisingly the media hasnt pulled out the 'severe coke habit, lead to this' bullshit.

Im sure being the age and condition he is in, there is a backup ready in case needed. Especially, to stop a pull in the opposite direction that can be established.

You are an idiot.

This guy didn't cheat on his wife or smoke some weed. He is ill, and may not be able to fulfill the responsibilities of his elected office. This effects our republic, not just him. Whether or not we have a Democratic senate, or a divided one leaning Republican.

Please go away.

"Im sure being the age and condition he is in, there is a backup ready in case needed."

WTF? Did you even take social studies in high school?

Yeah but honor in politics is a bigger oxymoron then Congressional Ethics committee (well I guess it is a committee)
