Old Oct 9th, 2003, 09:35 AM        All movies don't have to be three hours, damn it
It seems like someone has decided that a movie has to be well over two hours to be considered worth seeing. I have no problem with movies being long, but there are a limited number of movies out there with three hours of story in them. T3, Pirates of the Caribbean, Matrix Reloaded and a lot of movies I can 't remember off the top of my head were all two-hour movies, yet they all lasted for another thirty minutes. Anybody else have a problem with this?

I have a problem with Kill Bill NOT being three hours long. Now we have to go see it twice. Fuckers

Unless it's a GINORMOUS epic like Gladiator or Lord of the Rings or Poon Raider.

Bad Boys 2 was excellent, full of action.

So movies shouldn't be three hours unless they are?

Precisley.

Except for MISSION TO MARS. That movie should have been 25 seconds long.

Isn't it? Or is that as much as I can stand before I change the channel?

I'm not sure whether it's that editors have become lazy since 3 hours became "acceptable" for movie length, or that directors are just obsessing over their material too much for the same reason. I rented Matrix:Reloaded the other day, and despite the fact that I still love the film, it badly needed some serious editing. They could've probably limited the movie to two hours just by trimming the fight scenes to acceptable length.

The only excuses I see for a movie being 3 hours is when it's really epic (which is rather a vague standard, I guess) or when it's just damn good. A captivating and exciting story warrants a 3 hour movie.

Agreed. If the material has the pacing, structure and depth to warrant three hours of finished film, that's how long that film should be. If not, extending the length will only water the story down, make the film limp in its pace and cause loss of interest from the audience.

If it's a good movie I have no problem with the length. So you should all start watching good movies.
