oh, for poppy's sake. it's 14 below zero here, 45 below zero chill factor. a record breaker. we've been warned that if we stand, with any surface of our body uncovered, in the cold for 3 minutes, we will experience frostbites and noses will fall off. now that's violently cold.

Where do you live?

When I arrived at school today, my beard started dripping from the melting ice.

How far below zero do you need to get to get off school? It's pretty much exactly zero over here today, and it's pretty harsh.

what kind of pussy-ass school closes its doors because it's cold out? i can understand snow, i can understand ice...but "it's so cold...i can't go to school because my winter-wear isn't groovy enough." give me a break. i'm in new york and i was able to trek my butt to work yesterday and today...the true engineering principle of it all is to wear a "coat," "gloves," "scarf" and "dress in layers." better not let the word out to your school, or else your ass would be there right now!

Geggy and I live in Salem, MA. Most of Massachusetts schools are closed today. This is only the second time in my life it's happened, the last was twenty some odd years ago.

The problem is kids get frost bitten faster and worse than adults. If they're waiting for the bus or walking to school, they can get frostbite in just a few minutes and you can't trust little kids not to do some dumbass thing like loose a mitten or hat. In addition, nothing here is built with this kind of cold in mind. Pipes are freezing, cars won't start, the power grid is strainingg, etc.

It's like when it snows in the south. We don't know how to handle this kind of cold. Me personally, I don't have a problem with it. I even knd of like it. I am however, using my kids being home as an excuse to tay home myself. It's a mile walk from my house to the train station and it just didn't seem like fun to me.
