In New Zealand we call your yams 'kumara' & these 2 inch things 'yams':

that's cause "yams" aren't actually yams. The things America calls yams are actually Sweet Potatos (even though they aren't really potatos) yams are a pacfic island thing and they refer to a very starchy root vegatable that can be anywhere from a few ounces to over 100 pounds.
