With Thanksgiving coming soon, I thought I'd pay tribute to what is one of the greatest holiday movies that I always make a point to watch around this time of year. Planes, Trains & Automobiles is a classic Steve Martin and John Candy flick (written & directed by John Hughes) that never seems to get the credit it deserves, nor does it seem to make many of people's "must see holiday movies" lists. So here it is, my tribute to the movie with what I think are the ten best things about it.

It's wierd how no one seems to talk about it as a classic. Hell, it took me forever to get around to seeing it. I had been told it was "Well, you know, all right. Not really that memorable." I finally ended up watching it only because I had nothing better to do at the time.

Needless to say that after watching it, I was kind of pissed that it had been delegated as a mediocre film. Turns out, the person who told me that it was "not really that memorable" hadn't actually seen it, he had only heard someone ELSE say that it was mediocre.

I dunno. It just seems like this is one of those movies that people pass by.

Great piece - this movie is totally underrated. Are there seriously FIVE Beethoven movies though?

Anyone any age can watch this movie and laugh. I will alway's miss John Candy, Go Argo's.

I don't mean to split hairs here, but when you look at someones writing credit on imdb and it just says "(characters)" next to it (especially a sequel) it typically means that they have fuck all to do with the actual writing of the movie.

Assuming John Hughes had any controll over where his fictional characters ended up after the first movie (which he probably didn't), the fact that he didn't care about them maintaining their integrity or take any stock whatsoever in how they'd be portrayed would show he thinks as little of Beethoven as you do.

He did write it under a pseudonym after all.

I get it though, you're just making the point that he sucks. You can't always be 100% truthfull when you're writing zingers.

Yeah, he did write the first Beethoven movie and then the characters were continued on for 4 additional films (so far). What does this mean? It means it's ALL HIS FAULT.

But the main reason I brought up the Beethoven thing was that the last decent thing he did was "Dutch" and that was back in 1991, and still not on par with his earlier work. I mean come on, in recent times he wrote "Home Alone 3" and "Maid in Manhattan". Not quite the same kind o' memorable material he used to produce.

the only thing i ever saw in maid in manhattan was the end which features all the characters on the covers of magazines as a way to explain where they wound up, which is the single worst way to end a comedy.

I hope he was up all night with diareah that he had just from guilt that he felt from writing it

Oh man, you left out my favorite part when neal page got aggravated by del griffith's bedtime routine and started hurling insults at him in the hotel room. His insults had me nearly bleeding from my anus from laughing too hard.

I agree that this is an unappreciated classic, I've loved this movie since I was a kid (and particularly since, in the 80s, parents didn't think Sin crawled fangfirst through your rectum by hearing the word "fuck") and I'd be lying if I said I'd found anyone else that seemed to have enjoyed or even seen it. I've had a few converts by making them watch it at my house, but the majority seem to largely ignore it.

There may still be hope yet though. Now that this article is here... I only hope I-Mock isn't so big a cultural waypath that it'll soon start being quoted incessantly... seems to me the only part of the movie anyone else remembers is "You're fucked."
