I like how the nbc interviewers keep trying to pressure Phelps, and he really doesn't care about leaving with 7 medals of every kind to beat someones record.

I love the Olympics. I am in anticipation for the Marathon, Triathlon, and Decathlon; well, I guess all the best sports really.

I know I haven't taken statistics yet so I may be wrong, but my guess would be that chances are the record for any type of medals won would be higher than the one for just golds. Anyway, I don't think Phelps is competing in anything that he wasn't aiming to take the gold in.

no, the record was 7 gold medals, and it was set by mark spitz

the record for medals of any kind in one olympiad is 8 so if he medalled in every event he entered he'd still tie it.
