Seriously though, Final Fantasy VII is one of, if not the, greatest RPGs of all time. The Materia system is by far the best magic system ever and anyone who hates Sephiroth is a dick.

As far as I know there wasn't any directly the same as the Materia system, but a lot of games involve gems=magic.

Espers aren't used like materia. No FF system has been the same as Materia. Not saying it was revolutionary but it is unique.

I live for pointless discussions. For the Official Record, I rented the original Final Fantasy, but the free copy of Dragon Warrior I got with my Nintendo Power (re?)subscription got a lot more play. I liked the materia system, it didn't cost as much as the faggy magic system in FF1-5(? haven't played it yet) because you could "recycle" materia onto your other characters every time you mastered it and it created a new one. Much better than having to buy all those costly spells seperately for your party.
