I have almost the exact, exact minimum requirements to play Half-Life 2 on my computer. The only difference is, I have a 1.7 Ghz processor, which is better than minimum. But every time I try to run it, it goes to the loading screen and crashes, and I assume it's because my computer is so shitty.

So now I'm pissed and I've decided that I need to buy a $250 video card and 512 MB of RAM so I can play this damn game

What are your exact specs?

I know people who have had HL2 running on DX6 level hardware so there is hope.

Those actually are my exact specs--the ones on the bottom of the HL2 box, minimum, 'cept my processor is faster.

I've got DirectX9 capability, so I have no clue why it's broke. I don't have a dedicated graphics card, so maybe that's it. Also, I suck at computer, so maybe that's the problem.

You have onboard graphics?

If so you might want to try increaseing the ammount of shared memory available to the GPU. This is done via the bios and depending on how much RAM you have set it to about 32-64mb (32 if you only have 256MB (i cant find my damn HL2 box atm too check the reqs))

Basically the steps to solveing the problem are as follows...

- Update graphics driver. Does it still crash?

yes

- Update sound card drivers. Does it still crash?

yes

- Reinstall motherboard drivers . Does it still crash?

yes

- Format rather than messing with all the other possible stuff. Does it still crash?

yes

- Give up, or get a geek friend to try and sort it out.

Done the first three. I'll prolly get someone to look at it, it should be able to work soon.

See, it'll get to the Loading... screen and then I'll hear th elittle "DING" noise so I know there's an error, and it just crashes. Doesn't tell me about the error, just shuts down.

It's almost definitely a video card issue (having more RAM can't hurt, either, and makes everything else go faster).

My brother's got a P4 1.8 with 512MB of RAM and HL2 runs fine.

Yeah, I'm gonna get a video card soon...I have 50 bucks, so I'll just have to keep saving.

Gimme a suggestion for a good card I can buy for cheap? Please? ;D

When installing new drivers be sure to follow this procedure...

1# Restart computer and boot into safe mode (press F8 shortly after the computer 'posts').

2# Remove the current ATI drivers via the control panel > add/remove programs menu.

3# Restart.

4# Run driver cleaner filtering for ATI catalsyt drivers.

5# Install 4.12 drivers.

6# Restart.

7# Job done.

Driver cleaner

This is assuming you are using an ATI card btw.
