I think you'r reading in more than I intended. let me make it simple. I'm glad he ratted out Nixon and company. They needed to be ratted out. He was only one aspect of the work Woodward and Bernstein did, but he was key. I'm really, really happy they got caught, I think it's important they got vaught. Concidering his superior officer at the FBI was implicated I don't really see other options he had. AND I wish there was a similar insider in this adminitsration willing to blow the whistle. You want to compare this to mafia hit men, fine. Personally I think ratting out the mob takes a certain courage, but that's neither here not there.
I'll hereby withdraw my 'Great American' claim. I think people do all kinds of things for all kinds of motivations. If motivation is as critical as you think it is, I'd say no one knows who the great Americans were or are.
Felt didn't do it to 'save his skin'. Maybe he did it for very petty reasons. I don't know. We're at a Nixon moment again. We're living through an imperial presidency of the sort Nixon was dreaming of. I believe America is better than this and that we'll pendulum back away from the path we're on. I hope there's a Felt out there to help us on our way. I'll tell you what, though. I don't think anyone who rises to that lebvel of power is what you'd call a good guy. All you can hope for is that at the end of the day somebody says 'enough is enough''.
