Old Sep 12th, 2003, 01:36 AM        Questions about Metal
I have a few questions that hopefully the metalheads of the board can provide some answers.
Firstly, since Soulseek is down, are there any other good file sharing servers for finding metal?
And what exactly are the differences between the three death metal subgenres I've heard about, those being New York style, Florida style and Gothenburg style?
I need to find about metal bands touring my area, if anyone might know some website for such a purpose, gratitude will be given.
What makes a band numetal, and how is that pronounced anyway?
I'll probably think of more questions when I'm less tired, but I'd appreciate help with the ones I've just posted

There's no such thing as the new york style of death metal, unless you're thinking deathcore.

Floridian death metal usually is all about blast beats, technical riffs, atonal solos a la slayer and deep guttural vocals. Check out:

Nocturnus : The Key
Massacre: From Beyond
Death: Human
Deicide: Deicide
Malevolent Creation : Retribution

Old style Swedish death metal was more punk-like based on agression and filth, but with an undercurrent of minor melody. Check out:

the Grave, Entombed and Dismember debut. With fear I kiss the burning darkness by At The Gates. Astral Sleep by Tiamat.

New Wave of Swedish Death Metal is basically an offspring of At The Gates. It focuses on the more melodic minor side of the original deal, along with the screeched vocal school found by Tomas Lindberg from At The Gates. Most bands of this style suck horribly. Like In Flames. Never listen to In Flames. Never like In Flames. Never speak of In Flames. But do check out:

Dark Tranquillity: The Gallery, Enter Suicidal Angels EP, Skydancer
Soilwork debut
Gardenian debut

Shit I don't know any other good NWOSDM bands.

To be nu metal, you must simply copy Faith No More shamelessly, and do it with not an inch of musicwriting ability, not humour. Optionally you need to constantly whine and claim you're from a broken home where your father raped you for the milk regardless from if this is true or not. Oh and you have to think Pantera are a good band. It's pronounced: "C-r-a-p".

Any more questions?

What is the difference between progressive rock and progressive metal? And seriously, how is nu-metal pronounced?

I'm gonna repeat some of what helm has already said but with variation.
if you want to hear the originators of each genre just go with these:

New York: Suffocation

Florida: Cannible Corpse/Death

Sweden: Entombed (early only)

They all started around the same time.

If you want to get into all that cross over classification of swedish death metal it gets pretty sticky. As far as i'm concerned there are two basic styles of the melodic swedish sound. Both of wich are very differnt form the true death metal sound of entombed. there is the melodic thrash like sound (derived from at the gates last album, 1996) and then there is truer melodic sound started by At the gates, Dark tranquility and others in the early ninteys.

the melodic thrash bands are all rather new and include:
The Haunted
Carnal forge
Corporation 187
etc.

the true(r) melodic sound can be found in such bands as

Soilwork---------------------------------------------------------------Sweden
in flames--------------------------------------------------------------Sweden
Dark tranquility------------------------------------------------------Sweden
Amon Amarth---------------------------------------------------------Sweden
Arch Enemy-----------------------------------------------------------Sweden
The Crown-----------------------------------------------------------Sweden
Carcass (heartwork only) -------------------------------------Sweden/england
Witchery------------------------------------------------------------- Sweden
Children of Bodom------------------------------------------------ Finland
God Dethroned ----------------------------------------------------Holland
Beyond the sixth seal ------------------------------------------Massachusets
The Year of Our Lord-------------------------------------------Massachusets

All the above bands are from very ranging time periods and locations but they play a version of the melodic death metal. i also it would be to much effort to separate the more melodic albums.

I think i used the word true too much but o well.
hope it makes sense.
o yea and i just pronounce the nu as new.

The difference between progressive rock and progressive metal is mainly in aesthetics, not the way they play. Progmetal bands have the aesthetics of (heady, but still) metal bands. Progrock bands usually do not. Might be some more distorition in the sound of a progmetal band as well as a propensity for technicallity for the sake of it. Progrock bands are more preoccupied with structure than chops. Not to say that they dson't have the latter too, but the difference in priorities becomes clear when you hear say, a Spiral Architect record next to a Camel record. The line is nevertheless blurry. Most people will tell you progmetal bands differ from progrock bands in that the former copy Dream Theater off all the time. That's mostly true too.

Also, suffocation play like a floridian band. There's not much difference between them and say, a more technical malevovlent creation. There's no NY school of death metal.

Also, the melodic thrash scene is the melodic thrash scene and besides it being due to Terminal Spirit Disease it doesn't have to do with death metal. No reason to confuse poor goat.

I know its confusing, but both melodic death and melodic thrash sprung off of At The Gates. Thats why i thought it had relevance. Also there are plenty of bands that could go under either catagory. (such as The Crown)

I hope goat can understand it

CC are from Buffalo, and Carcass are from Liverpool. I dunno where Sweden came from. O .o

I dunno about all this "melodic" stuff, either. It's fine if you like that stuff a lot, i guess, but i just consider The Crown to be Thrash, and Dark Tranquility and At The Gates to be BM. I know it makes mt life easier, but i don't like the latter two enough to give them sub-sub-sub genres.

I said sweden because of Michael Amott being in Carcass. As for the CC being from florida. I remember reading multiple times that they were from florida. So i went thru all the places i could have read that. i found one place (Satan Stole My Teddybear ssmt-reviews.com) that said it but all the rest said buffalo. So thats my fault. Also i think i half meant to say Morbid Angel when i wrote that.

They didn't leave enough of an impression on me to actually think about what they are, honestly. I've yet to be in the mood to listen to them. :/

THE ONLY SUBGENRES I LIKE ARE CRUST AND GRIND, BECAUSE OF THE WITTY FUNNY SONG NAMES (See: Agorophobic Nosebleed, Charles Bronson)

AND TO BE MALLCORE(NU-METAL), YOU HAVE TO WEAR BIG PANTS, AND SUCK

Czechoslovakia. It's also a common misconception that Death were from Florida, when, in fact, they were from the city of Florida in the phillipne islands. Weird, huh?
