how much weight is given to verbal agreements in a court of law?

as in we made a verbal agreement to pay a gas bill and now we aren't

or

as in they made a verbal agreement to sell us a house and pulled the deal off the table less than 24 hours before we were going to sign the papers

??

As long as the other party aknowledges that there was indeed a verbal agreement made if they dont remember making a verbal agreement with you (or denies it ever happened) it will just turn into a "there word againsted yours"
