Attorney General John Ashcroft resigns

Washington, DC, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- John Ashcroft has resigned as attorney general of the United States, the White House announced Tuesday.

"John has served our nation with honor, distinction, and integrity," President Bush said in a statement. "I appreciate his service and wish him and Janet all the best."

Ashcroft, 62, and Commerce Secretary Don Evans, whose resignation also was announced Tuesday, had been rumored to plan to step down ahead of Bush's second administration.

The White House statement did not give an explanation for Ashcroft's resignation, but aides had said he was worn down by the job. Earlier this year he was hospitalized and his gallbladder was removed.

Bush nominated Ashcroft to the post Dec. 22, 2000. In his statement Tuesday Bush said the attorney general has "worked tirelessly to help make our country safer," operating as the point man on the domestic front of the war on terror.

Ashcroft reorganized the Justice Department in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks, but had come under attack from groups that said his policies encroached upon civil liberties, particularly those of detained or accused Muslim immigrants.

There was no immediate word what Ashcroft, a former Republican senator from Missouri, will do after leaving the post.

That'd be hard to pull off - check out the part I bolded in his resignation letter below. Fucker thinks it's OK for big brother to know everything we do, but justice will be disserved if the public knew he wanted to retire?!?

Ashcroft resignation letter to Bush
Tuesday, November 9, 2004 Posted: 7:55 PM EST (0055 GMT)

(AP) -- Text of the resignation letter, dated November 2 and released Tuesday, from Attorney General John Ashcroft to President Bush:

Dear Mr. President:

Nothing in my life compares to the high honor of serving America as Attorney General in your administration.

The cause of justice is indeed a serious calling. Americans have been spared the violence and savagery of terrorist attack on our soil since September 11, 2001.

During the last four years our violent crime rate has plunged to a 30-year low. Under your "Project Safe Neighborhoods" the number of gun crimes has fallen to its lowest level in modern history. Drug use among America's young people has fallen and continues to fall significantly.

Corporate integrity has been restored with the work of your Corporate Fraud Task Force. As a result, United States markets have reinforced their position as the trusted allocators of the world's capital resources.

Thank you for your leadership which has made these and many other justice-related achievements possible.

The demands of justice are both rewarding and depleting. I take great personal satisfaction in the record which has been developed. The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved. The rule of law has been strengthened and upheld in the courts. Yet, I believe that the Department of Justice would be well served by new leadership and fresh inspiration. I believe that my energies and talents should be directed toward other challenging horizons.

Therefore, I humbly state my desire to resign from the office of United States Attorney General.

It would be my pleasure to structure the announcement of this resignation and the ensuing transition in conjunction with you so that your administration and the cause of justice are served optimally.

I have handwritten this letter so its confidentiality can be maintained until the appropriate arrangements mentioned above can be made.

I am grateful to you for the profound honor of serving under your clear, principled leadership.

May God continue to bless, guide, and direct you and your family as you lead America forward in freedom.

Most Sincerely,

John Ashcroft

I despise Ashcroft as much as the next guy, if the next guy is a huge Ashcroft despiser, but I wouldn't rejoice just yet.

It has been the nature of the Republican party for the last decade or so to continually surprise me by going lower. Note the current bloom of Nixon Nostlagia and the recognition his policies would be liberal by comparison with our current situation.

I'll put a small but significant wager on W. nominating that bastard who wrote the mmo about the Geneva conventions being 'quaint'.

I am happy however that soon I won't have to look at Ashcrofts pinched sour joyless mug or listen to his self righteous hectoring anymore.

Do you think the next ATG might uncover the booob of justice?

I think the important question we're all overlooking here is, "Can the next guy's songwriting chops match up to Ashcroft?"

Man, all this intense hatred for Ashcroft.... I guess he must have really curtailed the rights of many on this message board.

Wait, he didn't? I guess I haven't been here in a while so I'm not use to limp-wristed liberals crying about everything.

All babies, destined to be gay or otherwise, have limp wrists. Their wrist muscles have yet to develop. That's what he meant by limp wristed.

Alberto Gonzales - what do you know/think about him?

He's the genius who said Geneva conventions shouldn't apply in the War on Terror.

And chatter is he's at the top of the list for next Attorney General.

Much as I'd like to do the Happy Dance, I predict that Ashcroft's replacement will be worse. If he doesn't try to sing, I'll take consolation in that, but that's it.

I'm conflicted. Maybe an ultra conservative will bring more people over to the Democrat camp, but at the same time, I don't want my rights to be infringed on for four plus years.

Jesus. How long before the whole administration dons top hats, monocles and mustaches that they twirl as they cackle and tie nuns to railroad tracks?

Hell, does anybody know where Gonzales stands on any issues (aside from the Geneva Convention)? Please tell me he's at least slightly more liberal than Ashcroft.

Do you mean we he still hold prayer meetings every day and leave the curtain over the statue of Justice? (always a good sign in a justice department).

Keep in mind that this guy had his decisions about detainees overruled by the Supreme court, who are not known lately for being centrist. Scalia thinks this guy goes too far, is that enough of a description for you?

And because he's Hispanic, anyone who objects to the fact that he's also a facist is only saing that becuase they can't stand greasy spicks.
