Everybody keeps saying Gyllenhaal was underrated in Donnie Darko, but I don't think he does a very good job at all. I thought the movie was okay. Swayze is the man.

He did the job that needed to be done for the character. He kind of reminds me of Toby Mcguire.

And James Duvall is dreamy.

The direction and acting is shitty. Drew Barrymore especially manages to fuck everything up.

The first half is pretty great though.

Great movie. I give it a 9.5 out of 10. Very, very, good acting, great soundtrack, great direction, and great story. I can't wait til I buy the movie on DVD, the book (has screenplay) and Soundtrack.

To all of the people who didn't like the movie...

You simply didn't get it. It just wasn't your type of movie. But atleast you have got to like the soundtrack (no, soundtrack doesn't include the 3 80's songs...damn) or the music in the film.

P.S. A director's cut comes out in July in theaters.

P.P.S. Donnie Darko went to 58 theaters opening week, and went on to gross over 500K in it's short run.

The thing that intices me to watch anime IS the complete drop off ending! Its kinda fun after hours of watching a movie just trying to grasp what the fuck is going on since most start after events that nobody knows alot about(besides a 3 minute recap of the laft 100 years)

DONNIE DARKO RULES and Frank is the best supporting character EVER!

Jesus, why can't you criticize a single half-pretentious movie without people rushing over to tell you how you just don't have the capacity to understand it? I get the movie. I understand the logic behind it. It's not that complicated. And I think the movie has a lot of high points, but there are a lot of things that keep it off my top list. Like Gyllenhaal's acting. The only moment I really thought he did great was when he snapped out of the trance while standing in front of the mirror.

I know your post wasn't aimed directly at me, but if you keep telling people they don't get movies that have a few pseudo-philosophical elements just because they don't think their lives have been changed by them, you'll just come across as a moron.

I still wanna make out with James Duval. I mean Jena Malone.

It's not movie of the decade or anything, but it's a really good movie. Some things don't come together as well as they should, like Donnie's relationship with Gretchen and his sexual obsessions, and Drew Barrymore was definitely miscast as the new teacher. But the basic mystery and atmosphere involved with Frank and time travel were interesting enough to keep you in the movie.

And the music really went perfectly with the movie, especially the one at the end. I need to find that on Kazaa, but I don't even know the name of it.

And one question (minor spoiler?): How did Frank save Donnie's life in the first place? Did I miss it being explained in the movie, or was it that Frank kept Donnie out of his room when the plane engine crashed?

I think it's the latter.

The song at the end is called Mad World. I think it was by Tears for Fears or something originally, but the DD version is by someone else. Jules something maybe. And yeah, the music is good.

EDIT: too slow on the trigger.

It just started again.

One thing I like about mystery-ish movies, is repeat viewings reveal little things you wouldn't have noticed before. For example, when Donnie's riding back home, he passes Frank's car driving in the opposite direction.

And thanks for the song info. I'm gonna go download it right now. It made me cry.

Edit: The Tears for Fears version fucking sucks, Mitchell. YOU fucking suck.
