i was simply going to bump this thread but I will respond to fartins post
plus I'll add lots more information that nobody asked for.
Of course they look better fartin, The Shout Factory isn't going to spend tons of money clearing music licensing rights just to release shitty looking DVDs. These DVDs are probably as good as SCTV will ever look.
Another thing is that they are unedited. From what I understand SCTV is only seen in it's edited syndicated form, meaning sketches are cut out, and music is changed. Most, maybe all of the musical performances got cut out completely.
These sets being released now are the NBC episodes, they were 90 minutes long (66 minutes without commercials) when they aired. The first volume made lots of use of old sketches to fill time, because the writters hadn't gotten into their groove yet. I'd say maybe a little more than half of the material is brand new. But the volume one set has two of the best episodes of the series, "Polynesiantown" and "Moral Majority." Volume 2 has way more new material than volume one
The Shout Factory did this because they wanted to give people a sampling of all the seasons, which is what the repeats in volume one do. The Shout Factory plans on releasing the ORIGINAL first three seasons after they get done releasing the NBC shows.
