i'm real confused on the job system thinger. in order to switch a character's job do you have to transmigrate, or is there another way?

the reason i ask is because it would be almost impossible for a cleric to win a promotion exam due to how weak they are

You need to transmigrate. Promoting is a pain in the ass. Transmigrate every time you unlock a new class, or at double the level you last transmigrated it. 35>70>140>280>560 etc

Is this the first or the second one? Either way, you have to transmigrate to change jobs for a character, no matter what.

to promote the cleric, i guess i'll have to give her a bow or something.

When you're on a second playthrough, just cheat and level the shit out of a majin and then transmigrate him into a cleric. Her stats will mirror that of the majin's, by percentage of what he had when you transmigrated. If you're on your first playthrough, go into the Item World and level your 3 best belts and your best sword to as high as you can get 'em and dump 'em onto her.

The best way to get great levels is to have anyone learn how to use a sword to get that 3X3 square attack, then use it over and over on Cave of Ordeals 2. Try putting a lvl 300 armsmaster on a fairly decent sword, and it shouldn't take long, even for a cleric.
