French is their official language but what the average person on the street speaks is some kind of french-spanish-english pigeon language that I forgot the name of. They understand french if you speak it, though. The only time I met an Haitian was when I was with the army in Haiti near Port-au-Prince. It was also the only time I was able to make use of my, then, high school french. The people were very nice but also very poor. I gave them water out of Dixie cups that I carried in my HMMVW (humvee) because I didn't want them drinking from my canteen and, later, felt bad for thinking that way.
