Democrats accused of ripping Bush signs

A West Virginia man said yesterday that Democrats stole his family's Bush-Cheney campaign signs at an event featuring Democratic vice presidential candidate Sen. John Edwards.
"They just pounced on us," said Phil Parlock, who took his 11-year-old son, Alex, and 3-year-old daughter, Sophia, to the Democratic rally at Tri-State Airport in Huntington, W.Va.
Sophia became briefly famous yesterday when an Associated Press photo showing her in tears after Democrats tore her sign to pieces was posted on Matt Drudge's Web site, www.drudgereport.com.

"She was crying; they were pushing and shoving her," said Mr. Parlock, a Huntington real estate agent. "She was scared."
Sophia is the youngest of 10 children in a proudly patriotic family. The oldest two Parlock children, a 22-year-old daughter and a 21-year-old son, are members of the West Virginia Army National Guard, and a third Parlock — who recently turned 18 — will be sworn into the guard tomorrow, Mr. Parlock said.
The Parlocks went to Mr. Edwards' airport rally yesterday "to support the president," Mr. Parlock said, and brought nine Bush-Cheney signs with them.
"We stood there quietly while Senator Edwards went through the receiving line," he said. Then, as the North Carolina Democrat prepared to leave, Mr. Parlock said, "I took out a few Bush-Cheney signs, gave one to Alex, and Sophia and I held up one jointly."
Immediately, he said, the family was set upon by supporters of Mr. Edwards and Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry — "mostly the painters union guys" — who "started stealing my signs." Soon, "old women and college students joined in the fracas," said Mr. Parlock, describing himself as "strictly a volunteer, grass-roots supporter" of the president. Mr. Parlock ran unsuccessfully for his local school board this year.
After the family returned home from the rally yesterday, he said, a friend called to tell him about the AP photo on the Drudge site. "In the picture, you can see one of the painters union guys has a piece of one of my signs in his hand."
A call to the Kerry-Edwards campaign last night was not returned.
Anti-war demonstrators have complained in recent weeks that they have been manhandled by security agents at Bush-Cheney campaign events.

I don't think being mean to little girls is an offcial plant in the party platform, any more than loyalty oaths and arrests are part of the republican platform. Nor do I think this behavior is in any way indicative of Liberal behavior. I'm a liberal. I would never take a sign from anyone, let alone a little girl, nor would I ask to have them expelled from the event, sign a paper saying they were going to vote for Kerry or wannt them to be arrested. Shame on people who do nasty things to other people under the cover of politics. And shame on you, Naldo, for being a provocative prick while thinking yourself above the fray.

Oh, Nalds, if you ever look at this thread again now that you've performed the e-equivalent of ringing and running, what will you do if Kerry wins? I know, you think that's impossible, but a lot of people thought there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and that we would be greeted with flowers and oil revenues would pay for Iraqi reconstruction. It's good to have a 'Plan B'.

Couple Arrested for Wearing Anti-Bush T-Shirts to W.Va. Event Sues Federal Officials

CHARLESTON, W.Va. Sept. 14, 2004 — A couple arrested for wearing anti-Bush T-shirts to a July 4 presidential appearance filed a federal lawsuit on Tuesday alleging their First Amendment rights were violated.

Nicole and Jeff Rank were removed from the event at the West Virginia Capitol in handcuffs after revealing T-shirts with President Bush's name crossed out on the front. Nicole Rank's shirt had the words "Love America, Hate Bush" on the back and Jeff Rank's said "Regime change starts at home."

The man and wife were arrested during a July 4th appearance by President Bush on the steps of the state Capitol.

Jeff Rank, a registered Republican, and his wife Nicole said they did not intend to disrupt the president's visit, the ACLU said.

The Ranks obtained tickets to the event but drew attention when they removed their outer garments to display T-shirts bearing the international "no" symbol (a circle with a diagonal line across it) superimposed over the word "Bush."

The charges against the Ranks were dismissed in court and city officials publicly apologized for the arrest. The officials said local law enforcement was acting at the request of Secret Service.

Did Father Stage Alleged Attack?
Claims to have been assaulted by Dems three other times

Times-Patriot Staff Report

September 17, 2004 — Phil Parlock and three of his children visited the Tri-State Airport in Huntington, W.Va., yesterday to catch a glimpse of Democratic vice-presidential candidate John Edwards. Parlock, a staunch Republican, and his family were there to show support for the Bush-Cheney ticket when they were assaulted by Kerry supporters, according to a report in the local paper, The Herald-Dispatch.

What the Herald-Dispatch failed to report, however, is that Parlock also claimed to be the victim of similar assaults at the hands of Democratic renegades in 1996 and 2000 — a fact that casts doubts on Parlock's new claims.

Parlock's latest claim certainly is filled with the sort of drama that makes for a fine photo op. Sophia, his three-year-old daughter, was holding a Bush-Cheney sign when angry Democrats ripped the sign from her tiny hands, making her burst into tears. A photographer with the Associated Press happened to be right there to capture the heartbreaking tears leaking from Sophia's innocent eyes as she perched on her father's shoulders.

Compare this latest event with what allegedly happened to Parlock's family in 2000, when they tried to show support for Bush at a rally for Al Gore. At that rally, son Louis, then 12, had signs ripped right from his hands, according to a front-page report in the October 28, 2000, edition of the Charleston (W.Va.) Daily Mail. "I did not expect people to practically attack us," said Louis.

Or to what happened at a pro-Clinton event in 1996, as also reported in the Daily Mail. As he tried to display a sign that read "Remember Vince Foster," Parlock claims that Clinton supporters knocked him to the ground. "It must have been a strict Democrat who did this," said Parlock.

And then there's September 3 of this year, when, according to a WCHS-TV news report, a gunshot allegedly was fired into Cabell County Republican Headquarters where supporters gathered to watch coverage of the Republican National Convention. Among the alleged victims who managed to escape death that day? None other than Phil Parlock.

Parlock, a real-estate agent who was a regional coordinator for the Bush campaign in 2000, has unsuccessfully sought election to the Cabell County Board of Education on four separate occasions.

Parlock has ignored e-mails from The Times-Patriot asking him to comment on this story.

ROFL--- I gotta say, I suspected that guy's story was somewhat fishy smelling...

I mean, who takes their TEN kids to a rally for the OTHER party just to hold up enemy signs and expects nothing to go wrong?

Again, I'd like to see Ronnie's take on this development. How is this substantially different from Somalian shooters hiding behind women and chiddren? A guy takes his kids to an oppostion rally with inflammatory signs and then bitches when he receives a negative reaction... Where's the responsibility here? Should this man NOT have his kids taken away? Seriously!

I think the big issue is how the war in Iraq took all our resources from actually eliminating Al Quaeda, and then it took all our soldiers from fighting... well, any actual threats, and then it took alll the first responders who were in the national guard and sent them to iraq and put us so deeply in debt that we can't spend any money on actual homeland security like inspecting container ships coming into the us and how the war in Iraq turned out to be pretty much unnecesary and how Iraq is now on the verge of civil war and arabas hate us way more than they used to which seemed impossible but turns out to be true and we paid for the biggest recruitment drive Al Quaeda could ever imagine and Osama is still at large and Al Quaeda is still a fully functional terrorist organization might be issues bigger than a little girl getting her sign snatched.

City council candidate advocates assassinating Bush, sexually assaulting Bush daughters

THOUSAND OAKS -- A City Council candidate who once brought a hatchet to a Planning Commission meeting got the attention of Secret Service agents because he distributed fliers advocating the assassination of President Bush.

The agents and a Ventura County sheriff's deputy showed up at this week's council meeting after council members learned of the fliers.

"We were concerned that if he came, we should be prepared for the safety of the council and residents," Mayor Bob Wilson said.

Daniel Avila, 25, admitted Wednesday that he handed out fliers at the city's Oktoberfest celebration stating, "President George W. Bush Deserves to Be Assassinated." The handbill also called for a sex attack on the president's twin daughters.

Avila, who didn't attend the Tuesday night council session, wouldn't discuss his motives.

"I don't want to give any clue as to whether I'm serious or whether I'm playing around," he said. "I just think people need to allow something they don't like in their society to exist. In general that's what democracy is all about."

Sheriff's Capt. Ken Cozzens said authorities have been in contact with the Secret Service as they monitor the council candidate, who is an information technology specialist and a 20-year resident of the Newbury Park area.

"Judging by what he's putting out, he's definitely worth watching," Cozzens said. "I'm concerned when anybody rants and raves like that."

Avila first got the attention of authorities when he showed up wielding a hatchet at a July 26 meeting of the Planning Commission. A sheriff's sergeant regularly attends the meeting.

"People at the Planning Commission were looking at our sergeant to make sure the sergeant was aware he had a hatchet," Cozzens said. When approached by the sergeant, Avila agreed to put the hatchet in his car, the captain said.

Also in July, Avila spoke at a City Council meeting and held up bumper stickers advocating the killing of the president.

Councilman Ed Masry said an added deputy would be at council meetings until completion of a thorough investigation.

"He's running for City Council," Masry said. "We have a situation where these council meetings can proceed without any fear of somebody doing something irrational. Advocating killing Bush and raping his daughters is irrational."

Asked if he has ever committed a violent act, Avila said he has not.

"But if I did, I wouldn't be honest about it," he said.

As political speech I'm not really sure that's worth the effort. As performance art it fairs better, but I prefer more subtlety.

In the interests of being clear, as a huge lefty liberal, I support neither the assasination of Bush nor the sexual assault of his daughters. Indeed, as a matter of liberal principal, I do not support the assasination or sexual assault of anyone under any conditions at any time. In this I think, as a liberal, I differ with many conservatives and my own government, at least in so far as assasination is concerned.

Reminds me of the "missionary" who called himself Brother Moses. He'd go from college campus to campus, setting up a place to scream at people walking by, calling them faggots, saying they were hellbound, and doing everything he could to bait a student into attacking him, so that he could sue the University and move on to his next target.
