I'm surprised no one has brought this up yet.

So...what do we all think of this?

In high school, I read a book called Creative Visualization, which promotes the same idea (albeit different rituals) of using your thoughts and feelings to better your life. I, for one, believe in the "law of attraction". However, I believe that The Secret aims to promote greed rather than go for real self improvement, or how it can help others.
For the uninitiated, You can read about The Secret here:

The only secret here is that people will buy anything.

Seriously though, does anyone actually believe this shit? This is just a reiteration of those people who say that the way to lose weight is to have a "think thin" mantra while stuffing yourself.

Personally, I think that depends on how you apply it. I think that "thinking thin" helps and works when you have the desire to be thin. If you think thin, have the desire to be thin, then you will take the right steps toward becoming thin...which would mean to eat less.

This phenomneon is somewhat relevant to me. I've been making some serious life changes the past several months. All of them mental and emotional changes. I've noticed that as a result of those changes, new possibilities have opened up to me that I wouldn't have even thought could be real before I made these changes. One of these things is to think positively, and that what I want can be possible.

For example...while I'm not necessarily making more money right now, I do feel better about my money being safe and secure. And I realize that even if I might spend more--I now buy my own stuff whenever I can--The money doesn't go away.

I'm not disparaging the power of positive thinking, but this Secret crap makes it out as if it was ever in doubt. It's a common-sense message wrapped up in the mysticism of "ancient wisdom" as if people have been keeping it under wraps because it could make the poor folk as rich and powerful as the upper class and oh god NOW IT'S OUT EVERYBODY RUn

To answer your question, PJ O'Rourke once explained to an interviewer that conservative books sold well because people want to be told what they already know. I think that same principle applies here.

It looks like some sorta sci fi "If you think hard enough, it'll come true" book. But I mean if Oprah reccomends it i'm sure it's a MUST HAVE.
