Old Feb 7th, 2004, 04:33 PM        PICKLEMAN COLORIST NEEDED
We're looking for a colorist for the PickleMan comics. PoX will still handle all of the artwork (pencil/inking) but we need someone to help out with the coloring of the pages. It just takes up too much of his time to do it alone, so to have a colorist on board would really help.

That being said, we've setup a coloring test for anyone who is interested in trying out. All you need to do is download the file, and then color it in as best you can in Photoshop:

http://www.i-mockery.net/colortest/gullheadcopy.jpg

That's the file. And yes it's large, because that's how large each comic is drawn and colored in. Keep in mind, we're looking to have the same coloring style that we've already used in the Pickleman comics before, so if you haven't read pickleman, you can check out the most recent one to get an idea of what we're looking for:

Please email your submissions to webmaster@i-mockery.com and also send a copy to poxpower10@hotmail.com

Thanks,

-RoG-

? It's a volunteer position. We don't sell the comic or anything. But whoever fills the spot will be given credit in the comic as the colorist. And as always, anyone helping out the site is entitled to discounts on any stuff we sell here (shirts, stickers, whatever).

How does poxpower go about coloring the comic in? And are there any suggestions on how to go about it?

Well.. erm.. I guess you use whatever technique or program that you are comfortable with, as long as the final product looks good.
Now if you're serious about doing this but need some pointers, feel free to email me with photoshop questions ( because that's the only program I know) and I'll do my best to answer them. I'm guessing the main problem would be separating the black lines from the white bg.

Here's what I do:

1. Select > color range > shadows > invert
2. Cut from current layer and then paste on a new layer
3. filter > dust and scratches > 30-40%
4. Select layer transparency
5. Color it in black with a big 100% opacity brush
6. filter > blur

But since this thing is already in perfect black and white, you would probably need to stop on step 2. That's just the whole thing I do to get black and white from a scan, which I would do even if we found a colorist.

Hope that helped. If you have any other questions ( like on actually coloring it... ) email me.

I know there was already a thread about this, but just my .02:

I think it looks better in black and white. Sure it's flashier in color, but I think it has more character in black and white.

Maybe you just have that impression because of the more serious tone of the picture I made for this colorist thing.

:/

Not too bad, but the highlighting is a little wonky.
